I’m a born again Christian Grandmother/Great Grandmother, who DOES NOT support the atrocities being committed by the Bush administration in Iraq and around the world…. and I know the Lord Jesus Christ does not approve either. I’m tired of the televangelists speaking for me. I’m tired of these billionaire, corporate preachers promoting hate and fear and war in the name of Jesus, the PRINCE OF PEACE! I’m tired of the so-called "Christian" politicians claiming they are Pro-life in order to get votes while in actuallity, they are promoting death and violence and opression in every area except abortion issues. I’m tired of my Evangelical Christian brothers and sisters being media manipulated and herded like silent, dumb sheep! I’m tired of being silent. I’m not very politicial and I’m not educated and I’m, by no means a writer, but I needed to say this to someone, somewhere, so whoever is reading this, I hope you can hear my passion and that you’ll understand this is coming from my heart. This letter is a first step for me. I plan to become much more involved. Thank you, Cindy, for having the courage to oppose this unjust war and thank you for giving me the courage to join you in your/our mission to be heard! Thank you, Brad for being there at Camp Casey! I hope this message gets to you. First, I appreciate you being willing to talk about all of this, and put yourself in the hotseat with Brad. I appreciate it very much.
I want to say my heart goes out to you, because I can tell you’re opening your mind to other possibilities, and the first was learning that "we" (peace activists) are NOT the enemy. It’s never easy to wander from our own cherished ideas and beliefs that sustain us.
I would like to share with you my own experience, that may explain to you why I feel compassion for you right now.
I was young during the Vietnam War — just out of high school. I was quite naive, and really didn’t have a full grasp of history, as most of us didn’t. As I became aware of the wrongfulness of that war, and learned more and more as I read, listened to professors, etc…. I was HEARTSICK. There is no other way to describe it.
This was MY COUNTRY. The country I loved, and thought was so wonderful. Learning the ugliness that exists in this country, and that we Americans are not blameless, was one of the hardest things I’ve ever gone through. I got to the point where I just didn’t want to know anymore, because I couldn’t absorb it.
It was very painful. That’s why I appreciate anyone who is willing to listen with an open mind.

Mr. Silvas seems like a well-intentioned gentleman but he is all too typical of the American populace and even many in the military- ill-informed about the true facts regarding 9-11, Iraq and the "War on Terror". While many of them are willing to accept what the Administration and Bush say as infallible truth, those of us who are informed and those who are losing loved ones in Iraq are apparently supposed to be dictated by the same ignorance and blind faith. Their uninformed opinions matter not to me. They are ultimately the real traitors for not understanding the principles our country was founded upon or having the diligence to be part of an informed citizenry that rightfully questions its leaders.
Brad, how thoughtful of you to talk to any parent who has a child. Their hurt brings tears to my eyes.

#65, Steve — I understand and appreciate your anger. This whole war and related garbage is so far beyond comprehension, that we can’t help but have rage for what our country has become.
However, I would like to point out that more will be accomplished in the search for peace if we can relate to the hearts of those who don’t agree with us. In my opinion, Mr. Silvas is going through the very difficult process of opening his heart and mind, rather than to just continue with the hate and attacking us peaceniks.
If you can step into his shoes for a moment, and remember that he came here so completely against what "our side" (gak, I hate these terms!) stands for, but his heart has now been touched, and there has been a softening. He is struggling with what he thought when he came here, versus what he has experienced by the peace-making efforts of "our side" (and cheers for them for what they have done!).
Instantaneous conversions are very rare. The struggle is going on inside of him now, and he has been letting that happen. That little bit is worthy of support and understanding. Whether the conversion continues will depend, in part, what experiences he has from here on out. The chances of more awareness will be enhanced if he continues to be met with peaceful overtures, as he has experienced there with Camp Casey.
I agree completely that there are so many who are totally IGNORANT in this country. It’s completely discouraging. But, I don’t hear him stubbornly clinging now to ignorance. He’s opening up. Some of his ideas and perceptions have changed. That’s a very painful process.

personally I have known for a long time that our overt troops and covert forces have been used repeatedly and shamelessly in subverting other countries under the pretext of defending our own. The list of "independent nations" in which the USA has intervened in the past 50 years alone is a long and horrifying one … so I would never buy the idea that joing the forces has anything to do with defending our country, let alone abstract concepts such as "freedom" … but sadly I feel I am in a small minority of people who have such historical knowledge. The people who accept the basic fiction — that by joining the military they are protecting our country — may be guilty of nothing more than woeful ignorance. And in many cases that ignorance has been heavily punished.
On the other hand there is no denying that if all the soldiers in this war refused to continue fighting, the war would be over. How to make that happen? Here’s another thing we could talk about all day … but as I’ve been saying I haven’t got all day … I do think it’s a good thing that we’re talking about this stuff and I’ll be back with you as soon as I can swing it!!

Most persons face this issue only in a time of crisis. A senseless accident, a wasting disease or an awful crime demands some explanation. On Aug. 29, evil showed its face again as Hurricane Katrina came ashore on the Gulf Coast.
For the atheist, this is no great problem. Life is a cosmic accident, morality is an arbitrary game by which we order our lives, and meaning is non-existent. As Oxford University Professor Richard Dawkins explains, human life is nothing more than a way for selfish genes to multiply and reproduce. There is no meaning or dignity to humanity.
For the Christian Scientist, the material world and the experience of suffering and death are illusory. In other religions suffering is part of a great circle of life or recurring incarnations of spirit.

I’ve been learning a lot from different activists in different parts of the country about various strategies/tactics that can be effective in activism/change/reform. The range of discussion going on is remarkable. I’ve never seen anything like it. Practical, inspiring, personal and constructive.
Bruce O’Dell (he of statistical analysis of exit poll fame) is one of the guests on tonight. Plus other names you might not recognize, but who have done trojan work on the election reform issue, each in their own unique way. And non-special-guest discussion as well.
