Of course, the cofusion and chaos in Iraq was predicted by the peace movement – and by anyone familiar with the artificial stability of Iraq – maintained ONLY by the strength of a brutal dictatorship. The greater problem here was articulated by Gary Hart in an article in the Washington Post yesterday, in which he condemns the Democrats for not having the guts to do anything but virtually support Bush’s war.
With a handful of exceptions, the Cowards in Congress need to hear from every one of us. Here’s a great editorial that can be printed out and sent to the wimp who purports to represent YOU! Maybe, just maybe, soomeone will get the message.

WOW, Reg, thank you for the link to this excellent kick-their-asses-out-of-the-park letter to Congress. I’m in the process of reading it. I wonder if one could get a group discount rate for a mass mailing to every member of the House & Senate…gonna check with the post office.
I had been thinking I wanted to make a list of this admin’s offenses & send it to Congress with the word SHAME written in big red (red but transparent) letters across it.
This is so much better. Still want to add the word SHAME to it, though.
If it proves too expensive for me to send it to every member, yes, I can at least send it to MY particular wimps. But I think both D’s & R’s need to read it.

Re that letter to Congress from tvnewslies.org, I think we should keep mentioning it, in hopes that many of us will print & send it. God knows, the wussies in Congress need to have their noses rubbed in the fact that their inaction is detrimental to their country, to put it politely.
Acording to a book by Jules Archer (now unfortunately out of print but in most public libraries), The Plot To Seize The White House, the American Legion was actually set up by people as a front organization by fascists with the intent of using unsuspecting veterans as pawns in their political game playing. The book is about Gen. Smedley Butler, who bcame an outspoken critic of war after retirng from the military himslef. He wrote a book titled War is Just a Racket and he foresaw the military-industrial complex that expanded in power after his death. A good article about Butler can be found at

An excerpt ffrom the above about a fascist plot Butler revealed in a Congressional hearing:
Butler testified that bond trader Gerald MacGuire had approached him in the summer of 1933. MacGuire claimed to represent wealthy Wall Street broker Grayson Murphy, Singer sewing machine heir Robert Sterling Clark, and other unnamed men of wealth. They asked Butler to speak publicly on behalf of the gold standard, recently abandoned by President Roosevelt. MacGuire’s rationale for why Butler should ally himself with the gold standard cause was that the veterans of World War I were due a bonus in 1945. As MacGuire told Butler, "We want to see the soldiers’ bonus paid in gold. We do not want the soldier to have rubber money or paper money."
It appears that the plotters underestimated Butler’s intelligence and character. When this explanation failed to persuade Butler, MacGuire and Clark offered him money, abandoning any pretense of civic-mindness. Butler’s sense of honor prevented him from speaking in favor of any policy for mercenary reasons.
MacGuire eventually told Butler their real goal. MacGuire asked Butler to lead an army of 500,000 veterans in a march on Washington, D.C. The stated mission was to protect Roosevelt from other plotters, and install a "secretary of general welfare" to "take all the worries and details off of his shoulders." But Butler saw through their supposed concern for Roosevelt. He testified before Congress that he told MacGuire:
[M]y interest is, my one hobby is, maintaining a democracy. If you get these 500,000 soldiers advocating anything smelling of Fascism, I am going to get 500,000 more and lick the hell out of you, and we will have a real war right at home.
Yes; and then you will put somebody in there you can run; is that the idea? The President will go around and christen babies and dedicate bridges, and kiss children. Mr. Roosevelt will never agree to that himself.

Good post. Not many people are familiar with Gen. Butler. There is a bio that is still in print, I’ll track down the title/author and post it later. One Smedley fact, he is still the most decorated U.S. Marine ever, won the Medal of Honor twice. We need a 21st Century version of Gen. Butler to step forward from the ranks soon.
