Limbaugh Jokes About Detention of NYT Journalists, Until He Learns Fox ‘News’ Reporters Hospitalized

Rush Limbaugh is a disgusting human being. But you probably knew that. If you didn’t, audio from his show today — which is broadcast over our public airwaves to some 15 million Americans a day, and even over U.S. Armed Forces Radio — makes it as clear as ever.

First, as highlighted by Media Matters, Limbaugh made light of foreign journalists, including two reporters from the New York Times, being rounded-up in Cairo today because being detained while covering a story of huge import to this nation and the world, by a regime that has spent decades torturing such people is, of course, hilarious…

[audio:http://bradblog.com/audio/RushLimbaugh_NYTJournalistsDetainedInEgypt_020311.mp3]
LIMBAUGH: Ladies and gentlemen, it is being breathlessly reported that the Egyptian army — Snerdley, have you heard this? The Egyptian army is rounding up foreign journalists.

I mean, even two New York Times reporters were detained. Now, this is supposed to make us feel what, exactly? How we supposed to feel? Are we supposed to feel outrage over it? I don’t feel any outrage over it. Are we supposed to feel anger? I don’t feel any anger over this. Do we feel happy? Well — uh — do we feel kind of going like, “neh-neh-neh-neh”?

I’m sure that your emotions are running the gamut when you hear that two New York Times reporters have been detained along with other journalists in Egypt. Remember now, we’re supporting the people who are doing this.

Next, later on in the very the same show, after he’s learned that two Fox “News” reporters had been beaten and hospitalized following detention in Egypt, suddenly Rush gives a damn, and says he was just “kidding before about The New York Times”…

[audio:http://bradblog.com/audio/RushLimbaugh_FoxJournalistsBeatenInEgypt_020311.mp3]
LIMBAUGH: According to Mediaite, Fox News’ Greg Palkot and crew have been severely beaten and are now hospitalized in Cairo. Now we were kidding before about The New York Times, of course. This kind of stuff is terrible. We wouldn’t wish this kind of thing even on reporters.

Moral depravity. As appalling as it gets.

For the record, as White House correspondent Paul Brandus tweeted last night as the round-up was beginning, “79 journalists were killed around the world last year – just for trying to tell a story.”

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 849 journalists have been killed since 1992. Isn’t that hysterical, Rush?

UPDATE 2/4/11: ABC News has compiled a rather lengthy list of the journalists rounded-up in Egypt this week and what happened to each. Rachel Maddow explains why she believes it is being done.

UPDATE 2/5/11: Thanks to UK’s Guardian for citing our coverage in their own coverage of Egypt yesterday, helping the world to understand that Limbaugh does not represent the true values of this nation.

  1. An exceptionally disgusting level of hypocrisy, even for the likes of Rush Limbaugh?

  2. I was surprised to learn via Twitter that FOX News reporting had suddenly become more fair and balanced with regard to Egypt after their reporters had the shit beat out of them.

But I can’t imagine that the owners of our corporate mainstream media will allow much truth, and I don’t expect much from the alternative media either. Obama (he prays for peace but pays for violence) and Hillary (the Mubaraks are among her dearest friends) are, after all, Democrats.

But I have absolute faith in the people of Egypt. During the week of internet blackout, I was still following about twenty people Tweeting from on the ground in Egypt by various ingenious means, and since I don’t pay much attention to mainstream media, I only really noticed the blackout when the internet in Egypt came back up and suddenly I was inundated with a flood of Tweets.

    Yalla, Egypt!

  3. Wow! Here’s another courageous reporter:

    @Egyptocracy tweets:

Shahira Amin is in #Tahrir now, siding with the people after quitting propaganda run state network Nile TV.

    ————–

And this as Mubarak’s thugs prepare another massacre of the people in Tahrir Square.

  4. Every time I think Limbaugh has reached absolute rock bottom, he opens his pie hole again.

  5. There should be a law for broadcasters that they have a high school diploma. You know, their “birth certificate”. If it were implemented tomorrow Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh wouldn’t have a job. They are a testament though to “quit school and get a high paying job scaring intellectually lazy white people”.

  6. Not that I expect you to care, but without a preconceived notion of your point, I listened to the first excerpt and found the first segment directly linked to the final sentence. His point, to me, seemed to be that since we (the US) are supposed to be fans of the rebellion (and/or our government was/is supporting the existing government), how are we supposed to feel… either the people we’re calling heroes are rounding up reporters, OR the government OUR government has been propping up is doing it. So do we as citizen feel outrage, do we toe the national pride line?

Not a dittohead, not that should matter.

  7. If you’re not a Rush fan, you’d know that ALL the reporters who had their cameras smashed or confiscated, were forced out of their hotels, or were severely beaten, including reporters from Reuters, AP, CNN, BBC, the Washington Post, the New York Times, and many more, have stated that it was done by government forces. Only somebody who was tuned to Rush instead of following ANY other media source, wouldn’t know that.

Here’s a quote from the Wall Street Journal:

Foreign journalists remain under attack by supporters of President Hosni Mubarak for a second day since the groups took to the streets to clash with protesters seeking the end of the president’s rule. Several journalists have been beaten while others are reported detained by security forces or missing in what the U.S. called a concerted attempt to intimidate the press.

The simple fact that everyone else in the world knows what’s going on, shows that despite your misleading handle, you are indeed a Rush fan.

  8. “Not a Rush fan” is quite obviously a Rush fan.

Rush said: “The Egyptian army is rounding up foreign journalists.”–not exactly accurate, as it was not the Egyptian army but instead Mubarak security forces and paid thugs who were rounding up and attacking journalists.

Then, specifically referencing the fact that two of the targeted journalists were from The New York Times, Rush said:

I don’t feel any anger over this.

There is no escaping the fact that Rush: (a) did not believe those who were attacking journalists were, as the dissembling Not a Rush Fan claims, “the people we’re calling heroes” (the pro-democracy demonstrators), and that (b) Rush, with his childish, “neh-neh-neh-neh,” was absolutely delighted that this had happened to two New York Times reporters.

Rush’s “I was only kidding” came only after the Fox “News” crew was attacked.

Sorry, Not a Rush Fan, but I’m not buying the smelly, brown sticky substance you left on this blog. Only a ditto-head would think they could spin their way out of this one.

  9. Limbaugh is a shockingly terrible person. It’s truly sad to think of the millions of easily manipulated idiots that listen to him spew his garbage day after day.

  10. Limbaugh seemed so much more relaxed when he led that active gay lifestyle back in the late 70s and early 80s ….

  11. I have yet to interface with a Limbaugh fan who could probably find Egypt on the world map …

Limbaugh has the perfect audience to yap to .. same folks who agree with Michelle Bachmann that John Quincy Adams was a Founding Father

  12. Rush says, “We wouldn’t wish this kind of thing [severe beating requiring hospitalization] even on reporters.” That’s nice.

And I wouldn’t wish that kind of thing on professional hatemongers who hide behind the title of “comedian”. Well, hardly ever.

  13. I’ll bet you dimes to donuts, hippos to hypocrisy, or anything else you’d like that Rush actually believes that he was only kidding when sniding the NYT reporters. He believes that he is not being inconsistent, or changing his tune after the fact, or showing bias towards Fox News reporters. He will deny it if brought to his attention. And he will be sincere. And that is one of the key factors lending power to Rush and his ilk. They really truly believe their own nonsense on stilts. What we hear as assholish, insensitive, and stupid he hears as simple common sense. The most obvious observation in the world, to him. I hear this is his tongue-in-cheek-matter-of-fact way of speaking. Then, when the need arose to do a 180, in a blink he believes his 180 is consistent with his previous diametrically opposed statement. An incredible mental contortist. A world class self delusionist. The Mount Rushmore of magic thinking. Magically enough this domain is a might trek way, way up into the farthest reaches of his ass. Bring oxygen.

  14. More liberal feet stamping. Where were you when Matthews joked about Rush having his face shot off and when Schultz joked about Cheney being killed?

Rush is an entertainer. Liberals are the real vicious ones.

  15. Are you kidding? Just because the right wing talking heads tell you that the left is really the violent, vicious ones does not make it true. A truly objective examination of the left and the right will show much more viciousness on the right. It is blatant and downright meanspirited if not hateful. If you feel that way, and so you relate to them, it still does not change the objective fact that the meanness is overwhelmingly on the right. It amazes me how people have such a skewed sense of the media because of their own preconceived prejudices caused by self-censoring of information sources.

  16. Pavel charged, without bothering to look into the claims he was citing @ 14:

More liberal feet stamping. Where were you when Matthews joked about Rush having his face shot off and when Schultz joked about Cheney being killed?

We were right here. Where were you? And why didn’t you bother to even look into (much less link to) the claims you just made above? We provide evidence for our claims, as I did in the article above, so please feel free to link to the URLs that support your charges, especially since it seems you confused at least one of them.

That said, I suspect what you think you’re addressing, because the wingnut propagandists instructed you to parrot their claims without bothering to actually look into them, has already been spoken to back here in response to the article concerning Glenn Beck warning “You’re going to have to shoot them in the head”, as cited by a would-be mass murderer who was stopped by police on his way to shoot a bunch of folks who had been targetted by Beck, in the head.

Rush is an entertainer. Liberals are the real vicious ones.

He is a propagandist. And a damned good one, as you have demonstrated. And he’s doing so on your public radio waves. “Liberals”, whoever they are, have nothing to do with it.

  17. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) described the Egyptian demonstrations against authoritarian rule as a “virus.”

Sen. McCain: “This virus is spreading throughout the Middle East. The president of Yemen, as you know, just made the announcement that he wasn’t running again. This, I would argue, is probably the most dangerous period of history in—of our entire involvement in the Middle East, at least in modern times.”

Dangerous for whom, Senator? Dangerous for brutal dictators who torture their own citizens? Dangerous to the bottom lines of the military-industrial complex and the profits of the CEOs at the pinnacle of the U.S. global corporate Empire?

If throwing off the shackles of a brutal dictatorship and exploitation by an equally brutal corporate Empire is a “virus” then let’s hope that virus “infects” those seeking real democracy in these United States.

You can call them a virus, if you like, Senator, but I, for one, stand with those who are seeking democratic control of their country and their economy. Today, in the face of a vicious assault on our Egyptian brothers and sisters standing bravely before the Mubarak regime, we are all Egyptians.

Meanwhile there is this posted by PDLA:

FRIDAY International DEMONSTRATION & SIT IN is at 8pm. Link to info on world-wide sit-in:

The Egyptian Consulate in Los Angeles is located on Wilshire Blvd. near the corner of Highland Ave. CONSULATE GENERAL OF A.R.E. IN LOS ANGELES: 4929 WILSHIRE BLVD, LOS ANGELES CA 90010

  18. Sorry on comment #13 I meant “contortionist” not “contortist”.

    Also re comment#14–

“Liberals are the real vicious ones”. and,

“There are no pianos in Japan.” and,

“Peanut butter is made from screwdrivers.” and,

“God likes chicken liver lollipops.” and,

    “All Italians are Negroes.” and,

“Sexual intercourse is part of the driving exam in Bolivia.”

Saying crazy shit is easy. And fun, too.

  19. Good thing you didn’t post under the name Rush Limbaugh, David Lasagna @20.

No doubt some of the Rush ditto heads would have read your post and then booked a flight to Bolivia; driver’s license application in hand. After all, if Rush says it; they’ll believe it.

  20. @JB, I’m not a fan of either Rush or Beack, but you need to check your facts before posting (something neither of them do either). Rush dropped out of college (you would need a high school diploma in order to enroll), and he eventually got a job as a radio DJ. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t consider working for a radio station to be a high paying job. Beck also graduated from high school, and took a job at a radio station the following year.

If you had stated that Limbaugh is disingenuous, distorts truth, is controlled by the GOP elites, then I would have agreed with you.

  21. I found it disturbing when conservative pundits mocked the US journalists who were jailed in North Korea, saying that them’s the break and we shouldn’t life a finger to help them.

This is all sounding awfully familiar….

  22. GetYourFactsStraight said @ 22:

Rush dropped out of college (you would need a high school diploma in order to enroll)

Actually, no. I enrolled in and attended college without a high school diploma. Just sayin’.

  23. This Liberalism vs Conservatism is all just a diversion by Satan. It doesn’t matter “L” or “C” if you don’t believe in the Lord (Master) Jesus (Savior) Christ (Anointed and sent of God) you will not be saved and have eternal life…BOTTOM LINE! REALLY what else matters? This holds true as much for Rush as for anyone else. Is it really so important who believes what or says what in the political arena compared to the destination of our eternal soul? I guess there are some that will feel that being angry about “something” defines them, but as for me, I’ll take the calm and peace that Jesus gives. I know He is still in control and Satan must ask permission for any evil he throws at this world or us as individuals. I guess if we didn’t experience evil we could never appreciate the goodness of God. By the way, God’s book is a conservative book. He promotes everything that makes our lives pure and holy which ultimately brings happiness and satisfaction – because He loves us (not our sin), but us, and really wants us to live a life of joy serving Him. If you don’t want this, then you are among the Lord’s enemies, “But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.” Luke 19:27 KJV. The Lord’s enemies will perish and be eternally separated from Him. As a believer this does not make me happy. I don’t want to see anyone perish. So, all this said, quit dwelling on all the dumb comments that come out of people’s mouths “L” or “C” and focus on the most urgent.

  24. “We wouldn’t wish this kind of thing even on reporters.”

Is Rush here admitting that the Fox crew were not reporters. Sometimes the truth bleeds through.

  25. Hello Brad Friedman,

I read your comment # 25 referring to getyourfactsstraight @ 22 and found an article about going to college without a high school diploma. I always knew that a high school diploma was not necessary for going to college but it is nice to have a reference to show others. A little effort did get over 9 million hits on my simple search. In one case the url is: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/30/education/30dropouts.html
