McClatchy/SacBee Misreport O’Keefe ‘Pimp’ Claim in Story About LACK of O’Keefe ‘Pimp’ Claim

UPDATED: SacBee corrects their story. (That wasn't so hard now, was it, NYT?!)...

Share article:

Is it really this hard for anybody in the corporate media — the folks who actually get paid to do this job — to get this story right??

From McClatchy/Sacramento Bee’s much-linked coverage on yesterday’s finding by the CA AG that ACORN workers in California, as seen in James O’Keefe and Andrew Breitbart’s “severely edited” pimp hoax videos, “committed no violation of criminal law”:

But while McClatchy/SacBee misreports “O’Keefe…claimed he was a pimp,” the report [PDF] released by CA AG Jerry Brown yesterday afternoon — the very one that is being reported on in the article(!) — notes quite specifically: “He never claimed he was a pimp.”

Yeesh. Yet I’m the one who doesn’t get paid to do this, so has to beg for donations every month! (Hint.)

The McClatchy/SacBee misreport was filed on their website last night. I notified the paper’s editors, along with the article’s reporter Jack Chang, about the error via email last night. As well last night, I called the paper, left a polite voice mail for their corrections editor, and then spoke personally to their City Desk editor who kindly thanked me for letting him know about the error. Today, via email, Chang kindly sent a thanks as well. As of 11:51am, however — and dozens of dozens of misinformed readers having left comments on the article — no correction has been made to the article on the SacBee’s website.

Is it really this hard? Only took two-months for the New York Times to post its partial correction. Let’s hope McClatchy/SacBee do the right thing a bit sooner.

* * *

UPDATE 2:40pm: Well, that was much easier. SacBee has now issued a correction which gets the story much closer to the actual facts…

The story now reads:

…And an “Editor’s Note” is posted at the bottom, to wit:

Editor’s Note: This story has been changed from an earlier version to delete the statement that James O’Keefe III had claimed to be a pimp. On videotape, he had claimed to be a law student seeking advice on how to conduct a prostitution ring. Corrected on April 2, 2010.

We’ll call that “close enough” for mainstream media work, and thank both Chang and the Sacramento Bee greatly for timely correcting the error.

Chang also pointed out to me via email that another version of the same article was posted today at the website, and that one was also corrected (prior to the one I noted in the original story above).

Still waiting for the New York Times — “the paper of record” after all — to set things right there after more than six months of misinforming the public about the scam that was actually carried about by O’Keefe, Giles, and Breitbart who succeeded in hoaxing both the public and the paper. They have still failed to fully correct the story, apologize to readers and ACORN, explain what happened to allow the repeated (and still continuing) misreports into the paper, what they will do to assure it won’t happen again. Moreover, nobody has been held accountable, such as Sr. Editor for Standards Greg Brock or Public Editor Clark Hoyt), who both helped to cover up those errors for months

Now as to the San Francisco Guardian’s Chronicle’s abominable coverage of the CA AG’s report…don’t even get me started. It never ends. I have sent reporter Joe Garofoli an email though… .

Brad, the corporate media isn’t paid to report the news, they’re paid to promote predatory capitalism and to oppose democracy.

The entire mainstream media is owned by what, three to five big corporations? Small wonder they all publish the same lies.

O’Keefe not only won’t be punished, he’ll probably be named Press Secretary to the next corporate (Democratic or Republican) President. As such, he’ll have the CIA, the FBI, and other agencies run operations similar to how he destroyed ACORN, on any groups that oppose war crimes, support health care, or won’t just stay home, smoke dope, and shut up except when it is time to vote for somebody they can’t hold accountable.

There’s a difference between the Democrats and the Republicans. The Republicans are evil and the Democrats co-opt the left so that there can’t be any effective opposition to evil, so that evil can’t be brought to justice, and to so that evil can be expanded upon when people start to get sick of it.

Well look at that big surprise. From the unedited videos that Brown watched the “unedited text and audio transcripts” do not match the tapes Brown was allowed to watch which repeatedly showed that ACORN was not helping in the California office.

I’m glad the SacBee/McClatchy fixed this. I’d be dead by now holding my breath for the NYT. Remember, these are the same stooges that had Judith Miller. The people who had it right were:
    http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=2847
    Warren Strobel and Jonathan Landay

Knight Ridder’s Washington bureau didn’t take the White House propaganda campaign at face value either. In a September 6, 2002 story, “Lack of Hard Evidence of Iraqi Weapons Worries Top U.S. Officials,” the newspaper chain’s Warren Strobel and Jonathan Landay reported, “Senior U.S. officials with access to top-secret intelligence on Iraq say they have detected no alarming increase in the threat that Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein poses to American security and Middle East stability.” Throughout the run-up to the war, the Knight Ridder reporters filed story after story raising questions about Bush administration claims, with headlines like “Some in Bush Administration Have Misgivings About Iraq Policy” (10/8/02) and “Infighting Among U.S. Intelligence Agencies Fuels Dispute Over Iraq” (10/27/02).

Knight Ridder’s skeptical reporting stood apart from the more credulous coverage regularly put forth by most other mainstream outlets. When the New York Times reported on the aluminum tubes story, “U.S. Says Hussein Intensified Quest for A-Bomb Parts” (9/8/02), it emphasized the White House view that the tubes were hard evidence of an Iraqi nuclear program, and downplayed dissenting views. Knight Ridder published a very different piece, “CIA Report Reveals Analysts’ Split Over Extent of Iraqi Nuclear Threat” (10/4/02), recording strong dissent by prominent experts and portraying the tubes’ purpose as anything but a settled issue. Indeed, in the end, the dissenters were right.

Strobel and Landay received accolades for their tough reporting from some journalism establishment outlets. “Almost alone among national news organizations, Knight Ridder had decided to take a hard look at the administration’s justifications for war,” wrote Michael Massing in the New York Review of Books (2/26/04). Writing in the American Journalism Review (8–9/04), Steve Ritea commended the Knight Ridder reporters:

For about a year and a half, the pair had filed compelling stories on the issue and, on many occasions, it seemed like they were banging the drum alone. It wasn’t until earlier this year, when it became increasingly apparent Hussein had not been stockpiling weapons of mass destruction, that other news outlets grew more critical of the administration.

But when it counted, Knight Ridder’s reporting too often went unnoticed—in part because more powerful media outlets were too timid or arrogant to attempt to build on Knight Ridder’s many scoops.

Knight Ridder was acquired by McClatchy.

Keep up your good work, Brad.

Lambert as a fish and game cop is less scary than Lynn Swann as an elected Republican governor in PA. Or from my end of things here in the NW, Steve Largent, our golden boy, being a Republican Rep for OK for 8 years.

Do you think its all the blows to the head?

Okay, now I’m confused. He was seeking advice on how to conduct a prostitution ring, while not claiming to be a pimp? Huh?

Petition fraud could give Meehan a bad name

It began last month with one forged signature.

Terry Bradley, the wife of an Upper Darby Democratic campaign strategist, said she didn’t sign former U.S. Attorney Pat Meehan’s nominating petition to run as the Republican candidate in Delaware County’s 7th Congressional District.

And she’s not the only one.

A deeper look at Meehan’s petitions reveals what appears to be a pattern of potentially fraudulent activity that could result in criminal charges.

Last month, after Meehan’s neighbors in Drexel Hill told him someone had forged their names on his petitions, he gave county District Attorney G. Michael Green a stack of questionable petitions purportedly circulated by Upper Darby GOP activist Paul Summers.

State Rep. Bryan Lentz, the likely Democratic nominee in the congressional race, is trying to get Meehan kicked off the ballot, claiming that thousands of Meehan’s signatures are defective.

TruthDig could have reported better on CA Atty Gen Gerry Brown’s decision re ACORN, because they posted a story on the news release column (Right) without pointing out the lie in the wording. I did point out this site in a comment.
