We spent a fair amount of time earlier this year reporting on the election fraud conspiracy scandal in Clay County, KY, where seven election officials were indicted on charges of conspiracy for rigging elections, changing votes on voting machines without voters’ knowledge, and more during elections from 2002 through 2006. The officials included the district court judge, the county clerk, the school superintendent, and other election officials and judges.
As you’ve likely read by now, Bill Sparkman, a part-time census worker, substitute teacher, and local Boy Scout director was found hanged on 9/12 in Clay County’s Daniel Boone National Forest (though the story wasn’t made public until last night) with the word “fed” written across his chest.
According to AP, “The Census Bureau has suspended door-to-door interviews in rural Clay County, where the body was found, pending the outcome of the investigation,” and the incident has drawn many to believe it may be related to recent distrust of the Census Bureau by elements of the Teabaggers, as sparked by comments made earlier this year by folks like Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), Glenn Beck, and many of the other personalities who advanced paranoia about the possibility of 2010 Census workers being hired from places such as favorite wingnut whipping-boy ACORN, via outlets like Fox “News.”
Despite fomenting by comments like Bachmann’s “enough is enough” (as seen in the video at right), Sparkman’s death having come on September 12 (the day which Beck had called for his “9/12 Movement” Teabagger protests in D.C.), and the letters scrawled on Sparkman’s chest, there is not yet definitive evidence that the hanging was tied to the Bachmann/Beck movement, though the blogosphere is understandably abuzz about it today.
As we spent quite a bit of time speaking to folks in Clay County last March while covering the election fraud scandal, we learned a bit about what’s been going on there over the last several years. The hanging could be as much related to those events, and more that preceded them, as to Bachmann/Beck’s ill-considered fear-mongering, even as that recent fear-mongering may well have served to inflame the local residents’ already-inherent distrust of federal authorities…
A long federal investigation has been taking place in the county over the last several years, which, even before the election fraud conspiracy was shut down by law enforcement, had resulted in the arrest of the local Mayor and others on charges of drug trafficking and more. The sale of oxycontin, or “Hillbilly Heroine,” as well as marijuana seems to have played a large role in the scandal that rocked the very rural, very poor, very Republican county over the last couple of years. Arrests from the narcotics ring may well have led to the later election fraud busts.
In short, there are many reasons and many people who are likely to have a deep distrust for the federal government in that part of Kentucky. AP’s story included several disturbing quotes from local residents
One comment includes information that Sparkman had been “warned…to be careful when he did his Census work” by a retired state trooper with whom he had worked during after-school programs:
“Even though he was with the Census Bureau, sometimes people can view someone with any government agency as ‘the government.’ I just was afraid that he might meet the wrong character along the way up there,” Acciardo said.
Another local interviewed by AP offered a remarkable response to questions about the incident:
“Sometimes I think the government should stick their nose out of people’s business and stick their nose in their business at the same time. They care too much about the wrong things,” she said.
Given the deep-seated mistrust of the federal government, no doubt inflamed by many years of rightwing paranoia heard across the public airwaves, along with the community’s direct involvement with several federal stings that have rocked its local residents to the core, it’s probably wise to wait for more details to emerge before jumping to any direct conclusions, and pinning the tail on any particular elephants.
While working on this piece, it seems Marcy Wheeler at emptywheel has also noted the recent election fraud busts, and suggested the possibility of similarly-connecting dots:
With all of that in mind, however, it’s admittedly damned difficult not to look back at the kind of wildly-irresponsible and inflammatory rhetoric being slung casually across the airwaves to millions of viewers and listeners every day by folks like Bachmann, Beck, O’Reilly, Hannity, Limbaugh, and all the rest, without pondering questions such as: “What the hell are these people thinking?” and “Do they not realize that people are actually out there paying attention to what they have to say?”
We’ve long suggested on these pages that it would be remarkable if the rightwing Summer of Teabagging didn’t eventually result in somebody’s death. It’s still too early to jump to direct conclusions here, as Marcy notes, that it did. But it’s very difficult to avoid wondering if that’s exactly what may now have happened.
If the killer or killers are ever found, anybody here want to bet that they are found to be avid fans of wingnut media?

2) His death has been ruled “asphyxia,†Trosper said in an interview. “There was a rope around his neck. It was attached to a tree,†Trosper continued, adding this intriguing detail: “He was in contact with the ground.â€
That raises the possibilty that the cause of death was not hanging. Asked if this were possible, Trosper said: “Nothing is being ruled out.â€
3) Trosper said the initial AP story on the death contains “flaws and errors.†That means it’s possible that the AP’s claim, based on an anonymous source, that he had the word “fed†scrawled on his chest could be false. Asked if that were the case, Trosper declined to comment.
…And Zach Roth at TPMmuckraker offers more ratcheting back from the original AP report:
Previous reporting “left the impression that [Sparkman] was found strung up in a tree because he was a federal employee,” Beyer said. “At this juncture that’s not accurate.” Beyer added that Sparkman died of asphyxiation.
UPDATE 9/25/09, 9:21pm PT: Despite the influx of wingnuts to this item vis a vis MichelleMalkin.com (are these folks just genetically incapable of understanding that not everyone who believes they are wingnuts is an Obama and/or Dem supporter?? “And they even had duct tape around his neck. And they had like his identification tag on his neck. They had it duct-taped to the side of his neck, on the right side, almost on his right shoulder.”

Two people briefed on the investigation [from the state police] said various details of Weaver’s account matched the details of the crime scene

Coroner Jim Trosper has said the word “fed” was written on Sparkman’s chest with what was likely a felt-tip pen.

[Weaver said,] “I thought he could have been killed somewhere else and brought there and hanged up for display, or they actually could have killed him right there. It was a bad, bad scene.”
UPDATE 11/25/09: Sparkman’s death has been pronounced a suicide by the Kentucky State Police. Michelle Malkin believes we owe a retraction for this story for some reason. Here’s our opinion about that…

For me it’s still a shock to my system when I read the type of slanderous, angry, illogical comments that occasionally flood this blog when Brad hits a particularly sensitive(to the far right)story. Just freaks me out. Doubly freaks me out because so many of the words they use to scream at Brad are similar to words we use to describe their side’s rantings. Then because I try to be fair, because I believe we all have to stop making ANYONE into the “other”, because I believe I AM my “enemy” I have to consider what they’re saying and why so many of the words are the same. 2. Rachel’s guest said it was marijuana harvesting season in rural Kentucky. So he may have run into some natural Fed haters who were less friendly than usual.
3. I signed up to work on the census and my understanding is that actual counting does not start until 2010, it’s all prep and organization work right now. And they only go door to door to people who have NOT returned the forms that get mailed. So why was he going door to door now?

Census workers have been charged with locating the front door to every habitable space in the USA. They locate this portals on a GPS device and take a photo for good measure.
This is so the government can find anyone anywhere anytime.

Tunga, UPS uses GPS info to deliver packages also so I’d imagine Police, Fire and the Postal Service are going to use that info collected in the future.

Well, yes, there are all kinds of good uses for the census information, Flo, but there are nefarious ones, too, and ones that some consider nefarious and others do not.
I can think of a whole bunch of fascistic uses for the information, and could Google up the veracity of the evil Bachmann’s claim about using census information against citizens in the past. The census is very necessary for getting services and the prescribed amount of representation to all areas, but it can be dangerous to liberty in a big way if the uses to which the information can be put is not kept to the righteous minimum. They really are very uppity about getting information out of you, too.
I got a card to return to the 2000 census that tried to tell me I had to give them all kinds of specs about myself. I said, “Nope. You get to know one person is living here.” Period. That’s all I gave them. They don’t need to know your name or your race or your sex or your income or any of the crap they ask. There are other ways to measure that stuff that are not intrusive on privacy and where there are not, the need for the information does not rise to the level of butting in on our right to privacy.
I recognize that Bachmann and Beck are doing their Republican thing of trying to keep down services to the population and representation for the people, but it’s true that the census can be, and has been, used against us.
I know through a friend who just did the GPS gig preliminary to the census, and the stated purpose for it was to record every possible habitable construct so that they could get a more accurate picture of how accurate the next census would be.
Already, phone companies demand information from customers that they say will help in emergencies that actually help authorities when wanting to track, or track down, citizens… beside helping them notify others in emergencies. And what everybody forgets is that it’s the authorities who decide whether our rights are worth preserving in this stuff. Already, you don’t get to fly if your name is too close to someone on the No Fly list. If they think your description matches closely enough to a suspect, you’re a suspect, and they don’t mind using all this information supposedly gotten for our benefit to persecute us with their desire to produce a warm body in response to a crime.
We can also blame greed, hate, delusion, laziness, and authoritarian personalities for it.
It seems to me that in any two sided debate, if one side does has neither the empirical facts of reality nor the weapon of objective reason on their side, then they will do everything they can to silence their opponent who does.
This is exactly how the left has behaved over the years. Nobody else has expended more effort than they in the name of sabotaging a debate they know they can’t win.
Political correctness, an artificial construct of the left, is one such attempt to airbrush the truth from the debate. Related to this is their endless attempts at calling their opponents racists, a smear they know will bring any debate to a crashing halt – at least until the last few years as the rest of us are finally becoming immune to this nonsense.
Since their old tricks aren’t working any more, they’re trying new ones. The latest is to redefine the word “extremist” to mean “anyone right of center.” If you believe in free market capitalism, you’re an extremist. If you believe in the primacy of individual liberty, you’re an extremist. If you believe in small government, you’re an extremist. If you believe that it’s wrong to terminate late term pregnancies, you’re an extremist. In fact any expression of such traditional, wholesome American values as these lands you at risk of being labeled an extremist by the left.
And so it continues: the left’s tendency to turn decent values on their head and to recalibrate morality to their own convenience. Which is why they will do everything they can to convince the public that a desire for big government, high taxes, nationalized industry, restricted speech and unlimited abortion are “mainstream” values while anyone who objects to this is an “extremist.”
Well, good luck to them. It doesn’t look as though things are going to work out in their favor, however. The left wing agenda of the Messiah/Pelsoi/Reid/Axelrod axis is tanking and the polls just get worse and worse every day. Meanwhile, far more Americans identify themselves as conservative than liberal and the left is now seeing for themselves that a left wing agenda is political suicide. Europeans are beginning to realize the same and the right is making huge gains their at the expense of the left. How does it feel, guys?
