AG Holder ‘Promises’ Torture Protestor After House Hearing: ‘You Will be Proud of Your Country’

Share article:

Hope? David Swanson reported last night that the AG “made [him] a promise”:

As Attorney General Eric Holder left an appropriations subcommittee hearing on Thursday I spoke loudly from the third row as he prepared to leave the room:

“We need a special prosecutor for torture, Mr. Attorney General. Americans like the rule of law. The rule of law for everybody.”

He replied as he approached and walked by, surrounded by bodyguards:

“And you will be proud of your country.”

I was joined by others in replying simultaneously:

“Yes, we want to be proud of our country. We’re ready. No need to wait.”

Holder knew exactly what it would take for me to be proud of my country, and he told me directly that I would be.

Will I? Time will tell.

UPDATE 7/11/09: NEWSWEEK reports that Holder “may be on the verge of” and “leaning toward appointing” a prosecutor to investigate Bush/Cheney-era torture. Their story notes that his initial deliberations on this matter seem to have coincided with his comments as noted above. Details on all now here…

  1. “And you will be proud of your country.”

It’s been hard to take anything the Democrats say seriously for the last few years, but I like that!

David Swanson needs for this to happen, so he can bask in the fruits of all his hard work over those last few years. Make it so!

  2. IMO, that ain’t what Holder meant, he meant he’s going to send his ass to a re-education camp to learn to be proud of his country 😛

  3. That certainly seems more likely, Flo, than Holder actually doing what is within his purview to make Swanson — and me — proud. He has not gotten off to a good start on it, that’s for damn sure.

  5. Hey guys,

I’m not so sure we should be asking for a Special Prosecutor. Elizabeth de la Vega makes a lot of sense in this article.

Of Black Holes and Radio Silence
by Elizabeth de la Vega – A former prosecutor examines the special prosecutor debate

Because of the stringent secrecy rules that govern grand jury proceedings – and prosecutors’ justifiable concern about violating them – information that was previously public may be transformed into secret grand jury material. (It sounds crazy, but it’s true.) Victims and witnesses will be interviewed behind closed doors. And most will gladly heed the prosecution’s suggestion that, while they have no obligation to keep their testimony secret, there are very good reasons to do so. So there will be no public narrative, no official opportunity for victims to describe what was done to them by the US government.
