Krugman: ‘The Trouble With Gupta’

From Paul Krugman (via MCM):

So apparently Obama plans to appoint CNN’s Sanjay Gupta as Surgeon General. I don’t have a problem with Gupta’s qualifications. But I do remember his mugging of Michael Moore over Sicko. You don’t have to like Moore or his film; but Gupta specifically claimed that Moore “fudged his facts”, when the truth was that on every one of the allegedly fudged facts, Moore was actually right and CNN was wrong.

What bothered me about the incident was that it was what Digby would call Village behavior: Moore is an outsider, he’s uncouth, so he gets smeared as unreliable even though he actually got it right. It’s sort of a minor-league version of the way people who pointed out in real time that Bush was misleading us into war are to this day considered less “serious” than people who waited until it was fashionable to reach that conclusion. And appointing Gupta now, although it’s a small thing, is just another example of the lack of accountability that always seems to be the rule when you get things wrong in a socially acceptable way.

The BRAD BLOG covered the fracas, fireworks and smack-down(s) in the Summer of ’07 first between Moore and Wolf Blitzer here, and then subsequently between Moore and Gupta here.

  1. Howard Dean MD, would have been an infinitely superior choice; besides the Rick Warren selection for his albeit short lived invocation; this right wing talking point droid is equally disheartening. It’s just another of a series of stunningly shocking moves by the Obama Administration. Shameful selection, very sad.

  2. My favorite TV doc is Dr. McDreamy.

Huh? Wait. This isn’t the People’s Choice Awards?

    Nevermind.

Seriously. If he’s pro-choice and pro REAL science the rest is just gravy. Still, Barry is making some strange choices. I guess there’s a method to the madness. Or not. Same shit, different corportacracy.

  3. Gupta is a shill for the Pharmaceutical Industry. He also appears to think that National Health Care is a bad idea. I guess having large numbers of people not getting health care because they can’t afford it is somehow better than having national health care. So this selection caused me to say WTF?

  4. Did Obama talk about this selection at all? This announcement pissed me off big-time.

Gupta’s comments in those SICKO interviews were infuriating as well as inaccurate. He was a human snake. He spoke for the insurance companies, and his idiocy in talking about government-run entitlement programs was breathtaking.

I really don’t care if this talking-head Gupta will be a mere figurehead: His lies, his disingenuous bullcrap, and his sheer arrogance conflict with the best interests of The People.

  5. Good for Krugman for standing up for Michael Moore. These are two Americans to be proud of.

Howard Dean for Surgeon General. That does have a nice ring, doesn’t it?

  6. The best surgeon general we ever had in my lifetime, who actually put the public health interest ahead of his own opinions and morals was Koop. Only because of Koop – and his backing by Reagan – do we actually *gasp* talk about condoms and other birth control (and disease mitigation) methods.

What we need is a SG who will talk about how to get health care for those who can’t afford it. Note, that doesn’t mean absolutely it would be nationalized, (although that would be the most obvious implementation).

  7. OT for Obama, if you want to save our economy:
    1. CLEAN OUT MILITARY WASTE
    2. TAX THE WALL SKREE CROWD
    3. MAKE CORPORATIONS PAY THEIR TAXES!
