‘Daily Voting News’ For November 13, 2007

Guest Blogged by John Gideon of VotersUnite.org

I’m back from a very rewarding trip to Washington DC. The conference was a combination of Election Reformers of all types plus elected officials and just interested citizens.

Today’s DVN is a mixture of today’s news and some selected from the weekend’s news. Included in this are three articles from yesterday’s Daytona Beach News-Journal. When you read these articles ask yourself why the EAC would refuse to put out a warning. Diebold admits to the problem. Diebold has also as much as said they won’t warn other customers. The EAC spokesperson explains all that the EAC has done but only makes excuses as to why they feel they can turn their backs on a problem with 25,000 voting machines as if it will just go away. We should all let Ms. Layson and the EAC know our displeasure with this “head buried in the sand” attitude.

There were more ballots counted in East Haven Connecticut than voters who went to the polls. A hand-recount in a close mayoral election found a discrepancy between the machine total and the recount total. The good thing is this is the first election in which the state has used optical-scan so they have paper ballots to hand-count.

True to their ways, ES&S is turning the screws on New Mexico counties in order to get every tax-payer dollar from them….

“NAtional: Rep. Holt Introduces Legislation to Establish National Standards for Counting Provisional Ballots”
    http://www.votetrustusa….8;id=2644&Itemid=26

Awaiting a bill number on this, but anyone want to place bets now that it’s yet another backdoor to grant the EAC regulatory status?

    C’mon… c’mon… I’ll give you 7-2 odds… 😉

Of course the EAC is not needed to enforce federal mandates regarding federal elections, and the states can be induced to follow them sans EAC intervention as well, but… want to bet that Holt doesn’t care about that?…

And can’t you see those partisan stalwart defenders of EVM voting vendor’s rights at the EAC handling this issue with all the incompetence demonstrated over the years of their screwing up election issues monitoring such as the nonexistent voter fraud epidemic?

… the zapkitty wagered… and lost:

Some folks missed out on some kitty cash… the bill number is H. R. 4145 and it’s short, simple, and sane and takes effect for 2008.

    http://thomas.loc.gov

Now if Holt would like to toss up a set of similarly short, simple, and sane laws for real overall election reform and if he vows to steer them through the legisilative gauntlet with the goal of avoiding H.R. 811’s fatal errors and cancerous overgrowth then I’d be quite willing to lobby hard for such laws myself.

(By the way… does this failed prediction mean my Cassandra status is gonna be revoked? 😉 )
