The official nominations aren’t to be announced until tomorrow. But if this page at the official Emmy Awards site is accurate, it looks like our friends who created the tremendous Hacking Democracy documentary which aired on HBO before last November’s election have been nominated for an award in the “OUTSTANDING INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM‑‑LONG FORM” category!
We reviewed the documentary for ComputerWorld in the week before the election last year right here. The nominated team, as posted on the site, includes:
Executive Producers
Sian Edwards, Earl Katz, Sheila Nevins, Sarah Teale
Supervising Producer
John Hoffman
Producer
Robert Carrillo Cohen
Director/Producers
Simon Ardizzone, Russel Michaels
They’ll face some stiff competition, it looks like, in that category, but the nomination itself will undoubtedly draw more needed attention to this important film and it is, as they say, an honor just to be nominated. Congrats, guys!
Bev Harris, naturally, one of the film’s central players, had the scoop from inside sources yesterday and offers more details in her post.
The official Hacking Democracy site is right here, and you can purchase the film online from the producers at Public Interest Pictures (DISCLOSURE: They are BRAD BLOG advertisers) right here.

I always wondered why this movie never got the attention it deserved. Maybe it finally will, and people will wake up and smell the coffee. I suppose that for many people, sticking their head in the sand is preferable to the enormous anxiety and fear that occurs when one really starts to examine the facts on this subject.
Oh yeah! CONGRATULATIONS! And THANK YOU for such an important piece of journalism.
Finally something that makes a lot of sense.
I am very pleased that Hacking Democracy has been nominated. The documentary revealed the inherent problems with electronic voting, and the sleazy characters that are foisting these black boxes upon the world.
We owe a great obligation to the two Brits (Russel Michaels and Robert Cohen) that came over here and did the investigative journalism that should have originated here. They paid a very high price financially and personally, and still have not been adequately compensated for all their labor and efforts.
I would highly recommend going to the HackingDemocracy.com website and purchasing the video there. Then organize houseparties to show it.
It is such a no-brainer, in every sense — economically, politically — to support voting integrity. The fabric of the United States depends on it. My only explanation for the complacency of Americans regarding this attack against the national security of its democracy is denial, plain and simple. People with cancer, or afflicted with alcoholism, commonly go into a state of denial before facing the truth head on. Make no mistake about it; extremist terrorist organizations — ravenously greedy corporations, of neo-con chickenhawks, and Medieval-minded theoligians — have amassed under an umbrella in affiliation to usurp US democracy. It is high time to starve the vermin of fascism that is plaguing the United States of America. America’s biggest enemy is within, headed by a vile and corrupt cabal of bloody-minded chickenhawks (George W. Bush, Joe Lieberman et al), headless greed-based taxpayer-funded corporations (recipients of corporate welfare siphoned from programs for the needy and suchlike), and other vile looters.
I gave a copy of this movie months ago to some hard core republican neighbors (after an argument on voting technologies). When I finally caught up with one of them and asked if he had seen it, he said that he had been to busy skiing this past season to watch it.
This is the SAME argument that I always get from the people who are republicans. I support the republican agenda and ANY facts that you produce aren’t looked at and are discounted by heresay BS from Limbaugh or Oreilly type of garbage thought.
Hacking Democracy kicked ass and I have a copy on my cpu to give to anyone that asks but…. and this is a big butt
you can’t make people listen that don’t want to
The point I’m trying to make is you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.
Dredd, you seem to be intelligent, do you have a ray gun or something that might wake up some repubs?
Hi all,
I can’t tell you how excited and happy we all are about the nomination. Quick note regarding Jody’s post. I am in fact an American, the two brits I contacted to collaborate on the film and produce with me are Russel Michaels and Simon Ardizonne.
Also house parties are being organized for a big national day of house parties in the fall… one year before the federal elections this time. More info coming soon and the DVD’s at a lower price are available at the web site of executive producer Public Interest Pictures…
but also consider buying them from various groups around the country like Black Box Voting that are using them to raise funds. That’s why they are sold for less at PIP to help support election protection groups.

And thanks again for all the support.
all best,
Rob
I recently bought a copy of the DVD, and believe me, you have to watch it more then once to even begin to retain all of the great points it makes. There’s no way HBO would have risked releasing the film unless everything in it was absolutely true.
Watch it over and over again!
