NYT Blocks British Readers from Monday’s Article on Alleged Liquid Bombing Plot

Paper not shipped to UK on Monday; NYT web page blocks British visitors

Guest blogged by Winter Patriot

Monday’s New York Times included a long article about the alleged “liquid bombing plot”, which — as you may recall — was reportedly broken up by British authorities three weeks ago.

The article “claims to reveal new information”, and would certainly have been of great interest to NYT readers in Great Britain.

But they couldn’t read it!

From Tuesday’s Guardian: UK readers blocked from NY Times terror article

The New York Times has blocked British readers from accessing an article published in the US about the alleged London bomb plot for fear of breaching the UK’s contempt of court laws.

Published in the US yesterday under the headline “Details emerge in British terror case”, the article claims to reveal new information about the alleged terror bomb plot that brought British airports to a standstill earlier this month.

Online access to the article from the UK has been blocked and the shipment of yesterday’s paper to London was stopped. The story was also omitted from the International Herald Tribune, the NYT’s European sister paper.

Today’s Guardian has a bit more, including this:

For all the precautions taken by papers, legal experts agree there is little to stop bloggers and others from quickly disseminating articles around the globe via websites, messageboards and email.

Mark Stephens, a media lawyer at Finer, Stephens, Innocent, said he did not believe the article was prejudicial and blocking it would increase the likelihood of British readers reading it.

“Lawyers have a tendency to be overcautious on occasions,” he said. “By not publishing it, it is almost inevitable that the information will come into the public domain in the UK. It is already being copied on to blog sites and emailed around the globe.

Mr. Stephens is certainly right about that!

The article in question is available at the NYT website, unless you live in Great Britain, in which case you have to look elsewhere: here, for instance.

Excerpts from the article follow, along with a few comments from one very cold blogger:

Hours after the police arrested the 21 suspects, police and government officials in both countries said they had intended to carry out the deadliest terrorist attack since Sept. 11.

Later that day, Paul Stephenson, deputy chief of the Metropolitan Police in London, said the goal of the people suspected of plotting the attack was “mass murder on an unimaginable scale.” On the day of the arrests, some officials estimated that as many as 10 planes were to be blown up, possibly over American cities. Michael Chertoff, the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, described the suspected plot as “getting really quite close to the execution stage.”

We now know that these official statements — from Stephenson, from Chertoff, and from many others as well — were speculative at best, deliberate lies at worst.

British officials said the suspects still had a lot of work to do. Two of the suspects did not have passports, but had applied for expedited approval.

One official said the people suspected of leading the plot were still recruiting and radicalizing would-be bombers.

While investigators found evidence on a computer memory stick indicating that one of the men had looked up airline schedules for flights from London to cities in the United States, the suspects had neither made reservations nor purchased plane tickets, a British official said.

So they weren’t ready to blow up airplanes after all. They weren’t ready to do anything!

So why all the panic? Because it serves a purpose, that’s why!

What purpose? Whose purpose?

Is it any wonder that these questions are never asked in the mainstream media?

And here’s another important question that is hardly ever asked: Could they have done it?

Despite the charges, officials said they were still unsure of one critical question: whether any of the suspects was technically capable of assembling and detonating liquid explosives while airborne.

A chemist involved in that part of the inquiry, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was sworn to confidentiality, said HMTD, which can be prepared by combining hydrogen peroxide with other chemicals, “in theory is dangerous,” but whether the suspects “had the brights to pull it off remains to be seen.”

Your humble and nearly frozen blogger has done some research into HMTD, and has found that its synthesis is remarkably similar to that of TATP (which we discussed last week). In other words, once the chemicals are mixed, the reaction takes a long time — several hours at least, maybe several days — to complete, and produces an explosive compound in the form of crystals which must be filtered out before they can be used.

Among the HMTD recipes I have found, the one which seems to take the least amount of time includes the following instructions:

[K]eep stirring for 3 hours and continue to hold the temperature at 0°C [32°F]. Next, remove the beaker from the cooling bath and let it stand at room temperature for 2 hours […] Finally, pour the solution over a filter to collect the crystals of HMTD, wash them thoroughly with water, and rinse with methyl or ethyl alcohol so they can dry faster at room temperature.

So … even though we joined the party in progress, we were still five hours away from being able to blow anything up. Do you think the flight crew would leave us alone in the bathroom for more than five hours?

Whether anyone on earth has the “brights” to pull it off — in the bathroom of a moving airplane and without help from the flight crew — is extremely dubious.

But let’s get back to the New York Times:

While officials and experts familiar with the case say the investigation points to a serious and determined group of plotters, they add that questions about the immediacy and difficulty of the suspected bombing plot cast doubt on the accuracy of some of the public statements made at the time.

“In retrospect,’’ said Michael A. Sheehan, the former deputy commissioner of counterterrorism in the New York Police Department, “there may have been too much hyperventilating going on.”

Hyperventilating? Possibly. Or maybe — just maybe — it was something else.

As for the timing of the arrests, you may recall that serious questions were asked almost three weeks ago, and none of them found satisfactory answers.

British officials said many of the questions about the suspected plot remained unanswered because they were forced to make the arrests before Scotland Yard was ready.

The trigger was the arrest in Pakistan of Rashid Rauf, a 25-year-old British citizen with dual Pakistani citizenship, whom Pakistani investigators have described as a “key figure” in the plot.

Several senior British officials said the Pakistanis arrested Rashid Rauf without informing them first. The arrest surprised and frustrated investigators [t]here who had wanted to monitor the suspects longer, primarily to gather more evidence and to determine whether they had identified all the people involved in the suspected plot.

But they didn’t get a chance to do that.

[W]ithin hours of Mr. Rauf’s arrest on Aug. 9 in Pakistan, British officials heard from intelligence sources that someone connected to him had tried to contact some of the suspects in East London. The message was interpreted by investigators as a possible signal to move forward with the plot, officials said.

A senior British official said the message from Pakistan was not that explicit. But, nonetheless, investigators [t]here had to change their strategy quickly.

“The aim was to keep this operation going for much longer,” said a senior British security official who requested anonymity because of confidentiality rules. “It ended much sooner than we had hoped.”

British investigators worried that word of Mr. Rauf’s arrest could push the London suspects to destroy evidence and to disperse, raising the possibility they would not be able to arrest them all.

And here we are left with more questions, among the most interesting of which is: Why was Rashid Rauf arrested?

A few days after the arrests were announced, NBC ran a report which said:

One senior British official said the Americans also argued over the timing of the arrest of suspected ringleader Rashid Rauf in Pakistan, warning that if he was not taken into custody immediately, the United States would “render” him or pressure the Pakistani government to arrest him.

Is this what happened?

Did the Pakistanis arrest Rashid Rauf to keep him out of the hands of Americans?

We may never know.

But surely it’s becoming more and more obvious that this so-called “plot” was not what we were told it was at the time.

Therefore, it makes good sense to ask: What was it?

Stay tuned, my friends; there’s more to come.

You have been reading the seventh post in a continuing series about the alleged bombing plot. The previous post is here, and it links to all the others.

What I don’t like about the article you linked is that, while it shows how asinine all this hyperventilation about liquid bombs is, the author can’t resist replacing all the fear quelled with something even more ominous to keep us sweating. The POINT is to get over our terror and start acting like strong, intelligent and decent humans, not to continue with this death-dealing, sick-making fear mongering that enables the worst terrorists on the planet to stay in control. WHY can’t the griping victims of all this terrorizing ever stop ADDING to it?

No matter who is dishing it or why, it ONLY serves to increase the mass paralysis that keeps us from making a better world.

There are different standards for the actions of a lawful free press at issue here. In the UK, there is a precedence given to the due process rights of a defendent over the rights to publish without prior governmental restraints. I believe that the NY Times publishes in the UK, possibly only under the IHT banner, but this still places them within applicability of British law, no matter that many believe it is absurd, and cannot be enforced given the www, it is still law in the UK.

I think it’s a good law, and one that under almost all circumstances should be emulated by other countries, ours! It is problematic, though, when the population of the world is being terrorized — and put through monster inconvenience at airports and on airplanes, sometimes being dragged off by the police for wearing a t-shirt with funny writing on it, or for carrying computers while brown-skinned — all by the sensationalism, lurid speculation, and outright lies of the authorities. So, in this case, since the article tended to have a calming effect, it might have been better for the people of Britain to have had access to it up front.

    #2 Agent, spot on.

(Yo: My mind didn’t even register your point when I originally read that article. I guess I have a built in filter to cull through the crap.)
My intent wasn’t to add to yet more FAKE NEWS FEAR.
Only to show that it would be a pain in the ass to mess with TATP and it probably wouldn’t have worked.
Is this a reason to remove someone’s $12 bottle of LOBOB eye cleaning solution? Or little Timmy’s Hawaiian Punch? Hell no.

Liberty and Fear do not live well together.

One needs look farther than the patriot act I, II, (what number is it now?) and the domestic surveilance of all communications without FISA or ANY oversight.

Fear and no constitutional rights.. that’d be a match.

On the other hand, The Airlines OWN their birds.
And frankly they should do whatever it takes to make it safe, flying is dangerous all by itself. I know because I worked on F-4G’s and E’s as an aircraft electrician.
Unless your wearing a line badge, you probably shouldn’t have a knife, or other tools. Again, my opinion.

This whole war on terror thing is bullshit, bullshit, bullshit. Terror happens, and it needs to be fought at the Local Police level, not with missiles, daisy cutters, and nukes, and the shreading of the foundation of the United States constitution. It’s clearly a power move. The question is how make a better RAT TRAP and start holding these bastards accountable.

What should the punishment be for breaking the Oath Of Office?

Rush Limboob said that we should put the Iraq War in perspective. 2,000 soldiers died, but 40,000 people die in car accidents each year, so it’s “OK”.

I will use his own analogy…3,000 people died in the WTC, and 40,000 died in car accidents. So, what do we do? We bomb a country, undermine the constitution and our American way of life with fear, spend a trillion dollars on a war on terror for 3,000 people dying…etc…you get this picture.

What I want to know, do dittoheads (or fuckheads as I call them) really listen to this fat, lying, drug-addict, unpatriotic, partisan hack???

The answer to your question is a resounding YES My aunt is 86 years old and she listens to him everyday! If she wasn’t a fuckhead before, she is certainly one now! She has become an opinionated, in your face, know-it-all, sanctimonious simpleton!

Needless to say, her and I fell out years ago, when she insisted that the only news worth watching was Faux news! I couldn’t resist setting her straight and we haven’t spoken since. Her loss, my gain. 🙂

QUOTE: One of the suspects said on his own martyrdom video that the “war against Muslims” in Iraq and Afghanistan had motivated him to act.

This my friends is a response to the real TERRORISTS in the WHITE HOUSE AND WASHINGTON DC in their war to takeover Iraqi oil fields based on complete lies.

250,000 Iraqi civilian DEATHS and unknown # of casulties. Bombing 6 months prior to the US invasion.

    Over 2500 US Servicemen deaths.

No exit strategy because these greedy lying murderers are still getting rich perpetuating their lies even though it putting American taxpayers farther in debt and increasing everyday.

Winter Patriot, I’m tempted to say that you are the b.mb but I don’t use that word anywhere anymore. This is tremendous value added and I can’t thank you enough. And high praise for the first couple of folks out of the chute who were simply chemists stating that the level of sophistication to pull this off would be well beyond any personnel or even beyond facilities on the plane (something about mixing these chemicals being deadly except in a lab). Amazing, what a fraud. Maybe it was all a plot by Blair and Murdoch to divert the coup against Blair in Labour. I don’t want to think that but now that the door is open, why not speculate. These are, after all, the people – Blair – * – who lied us into a disaster in Iraq with deliberate intent. In fact Blair’s lousy intel study (taken from internet sources) was waived around by * and Powell as revealed truth before the truth was revealed. Great stuff!!!

#8 Sherry…I indirectly called your Aunt a “fuckhead”…the GOP gets free campaign advertising, too, when Limbaugh/Hannity/O’Reilly do those “between” show comments on other people’s shows. Isn’t that like free campaigning for the GOP all over our AM radio??? All their “mini” comments on break-in’s between other people’s shows, consist of lies about the Democrats, which to me, are GOP campaign commercials, and should come under those laws. Anyone ever think of that? If there are any laws concerning regular commercials vs. campaign commercials, these mini-breakins should come under different laws (if they exist), and the GOP gets year-round campaign commercials from Limboob/Handjobbity/O’LIEly/and the senile Paul “Wal-Mart” Harvey. Good day? I think Paul Harvey is senile, with some of the embarrassing shit he says on the radio. He should go back to 1850 where he belongs.

Well, I’m old, and way out of it, but it seems to me I read that “Nelly” or “Nellie”, a gorgeous kid with a Band-Aid on his cheek, had something like a brain and a social conscience…. Maybe you could ask one of your kids about it.

Are they still doing “raves” or is that, like, so last week? Maybe, before they get blasted, someone could suggest they get BUSY?

With our officials and the media so hot to whip everyone into a frenzy of fear over really questionable stuff, and willing to invade other countries from made-up intel, and spoiling to go to war in Iran, and forcing all reserves to go back on active status, the draft cannot be far off. They’ve already got the draft boards all set up for it, long since, and I think people would much rather take the chance of getting hauled off to FEMA camp here, or even of getting shot here, where it’s much less likely to happen, than be sent to the Middle East to become killers for lies, and killed for lies. If you’re right about their attitudes, and you probably are, they need wake up calls.

Or. We wait for them to pull that and watch the nation erupt into violence then…. 🙁

What should the punishment be for breaking the Oath Of Office?

I don’t know what’s on the books for breaking it, but I agree with the Grizz. Life in prison… at least for the top flight oath-takers. Maybe the minions who break it on orders from above could get 15 to 20, or a tiered system of sentencing, but when it is any top administration official, senator, representative or justice, lock them up and throw away the key. Unfortunately, unless we manage to prevent the election fraud in November, we might not have the power to institute any of this in the normal Rule of Law way. The People may have to make themselves heard, seen, felt in a more up-close-and-personal way. All this hoked-up terrorizing quells that instinct in the citizenry. That’s why we have to get over the fear. We need to be able to SEE and ACT.

#19 I like Nellie too….am also old. Hey, is this a predominantly old people’s site? When you guys were writing about your lives it seemed quite a few were the age to have been 60’s hippies. One of the greatest periods of our history, I might add. I’m already so off topic I’ll just keep right on. Rawstory has a great article up about the mayor of Salt Lake City making a speech that is killer. Old Time Democratic speech. 4 to 5,000 at anti war rally in the heart of one of the last red states. Bush is going down.

So, how many Americans know this “liquid bomber” stuff is a bunch of bullshit? Were there any polls??? Headlines should read, anymore, “Cheney at it again…now there’s ‘liquid bombers'”.

Let’s play a game, and predict what’s next. How about the “HAIR BOMBER”??? This one makes strands of his/her hair into little bombs…or how about the “NOSE bomber”? This one puts on a fake nose that’s actually a bomb!!! Or the “penis bomber”. This guy’s penis is actually a miniature scud missile.

big dan said on 9/1/2006 @ 7:06am PT: [Permalink]

Here’s 2 more: “The testicle bomber”…his testicles are really miniature hand grenades…and “The Booby bomber”…her breasts are detachable cluster bombs. Anything else Cheney/Bushco can invent for a scarey bomb threat???

big dan said on 9/1/2006 @ 7:22am PT: [Permalink]

My point is, they screwed up with the “liquid bombers”…that covered too much, there’s nothing left, so my prediction is they will move into body parts. The “Hair Plug” bomber, sets off pop-up mines in his hair plugs when he combs his hair.

You won’t be laughing when Cheney says they caught the first body part plane bomber!

Don’t forget about the mile high club bomb which can easily be ignited by the friction down below regardless of the hijacker’s sex. That’s right regardless of sex so homophobes beware! Nascar voters best keep your helmet on. People who insist on supporting leaders who are lying murderers continue to watch the movie screen and enjoy the ride.

    No box cutters.

    No hydrogen peroxide.

Next thing you know it will be reported that another commercial jet has smashed into the same side of the PENTAGON. Wings, titanium engines, misc plane parts and all passenger spontaneously combusted unlike all other plane crashes in history (with exception of course to the 757 airbus that was reported to have hit the PENTAGON back on 911).

This story will be parroted on all the major U.S. TV and RADIO station however their will be NO VIDEO. NO VIDEO from the most protected building on watch 24/7 TO EVIDENCE THIS CRASH EITHER BECAUSE THAT’S CLASSIFIED INFORMATION. SORT OF LIKE ANY VERIFIABLE EVIDENCE ABOUT ELECTRONIC VOTE COUNTS IN US ELECTIONS.

ISN’T FASCISM i mean U.S. democracy SWELL under the watch of the BUSH ADMINISTRATION.

The “Penis Bomber” gives new meaning, to when Cheney says, “They’re going to hit us HARD”! Only the most unintelligent of Americans believe this nonsense, but they are hardcore stupid. As Ron White says, “You can’t fix stupid.”
