Jill Lawrence, writing in USA TODAY, looks at some hotly-contested races for positions that were once largely ignored: Top vote counter becomes prize job…
The state post of Secretary of State was a backwater until 2000, when Florida’s Katherine Harris became a central figure in the presidential recount controversy. Now national Democratic groups and White House prospects, unhappy about Harris’ decisions and those of Republican Kenneth Blackwell in Ohio two years ago, are pouring resources into contests for the job.
…
Secretaries of State control most voting regulations and influence state purchases of voting machines. Looking ahead to 2008, Democrats say they want people they trust in those offices.
The report mentions a few facts that are painfully familiar to regular BRAD BLOG readers, but which might not be so well-known elsewhere:
Harris and Blackwell say they were following state laws and regulations and did not suppress votes.
Right. Of course they do.
They’ll say anything. But will you believe them?
The report contains several other very interesting details, but I won’t spill all the beans here. Please read the whole thing.

Gerrymandering and junk EVM’s are attacks upon American voters, because they thwart the will of the people.
When the will of the people cannot reliably be expressed by their votes, we have a dictatorship.
The USA Today article says:
This is disgusting! Instead of speaking out about voting fraud and rigged machines, Kerry and others opt to buy secretaries of state that will get them elected whether the voters want them or not, (we don’t)!
Out with the OLD, (INCUMBENTS)!
In with the NEW!
My name is Santa Clause and I deliver gifts to childen all over the world on Christmas eve!
Excuse me, but the Attorneys General of these states should have prevented these people from following through in their conflicts of interest. There HAS to be ethical standards set for holders of these offices, and there cannot have been no way to prevent this stuff. Everyone is beginning to sound like Gonzo on this type of thing. THAT they emit this gibberish does not make it legal. Call the cops!
The story of K. Harris is well known. She is out of touch with reality, a characteristic of republicans these daze.
And K. Blackwell is not doing well either:
(link here, bold added). The only question that remains is whether they will become so desperate so as to steal another election.
Hi Agent99 and Larry B

Did anyone notice that Joe Biden stated he is a candidate for president in 2008?
He officially said it on Hardball a nite or so ago …
Ha! Dredd. I’d FORGOTTEN completely about Joe Biden for the last couple months. Heh, guess he’s not newsy enough to do the trick like this fishy-ass ancient girly murder so-called confession.
#5 Dredd , You can forget Ohio poll numbers. Columbus Dispatch (far right paper) does them before all elections. Noted for their accuracy. There’ll be a landslide passing of someone or an issue in their poll, only to have it be a landslide loss. (EXACT OPPOSITE RESULTS ) They blow it off saying “too many Dems were polled” Now Blackwell wants absentee voting. Last time ballots were at the PO til AFTER the election due to unpaid postage. 69 cents required… who knew ?
Jesus – is it some kind of loony idea that state election agencies should be run by non-partisan officials?
If Blackwell doesn’t win – or if the Dems take either house – I’ll eat everything I ever said about election fraud.

I did hear that Biden was running. I don’t know what to think about Biden. He has made me angry enough to send him a nasty E-mail before by criticizing Howard Dean for saying that SOME republicans haven’t worked an honest day in their lives. Of course the Democrats have been characterized that way for decades.
Howard was just trying to make the case that poor working democrats didn’t have time to stand in line for hours while Blackwell warehoused voting machines.
I saw him on Bill Maher’s show, (he did have a show once didn’t he), last year and he gave a quite stunning performance talking about Iraq. I’m sure I’d vote for him if he became the Democrats choice. Now if he would talk about the voting machines, (which he hasn’t touched), it would really warm me up despite the fact that he’s an INCUMBENT.
