Riverside County Registrar of Voters Barbara Dunmore has decided to not follow directives from the SoS and not to post the results at the precincts. The reasons? For one, she said, there’s nothing to keep people from walking off with the tallies. More importantly, observers might be able to deduce how particular people voted at polls where only a handful of voters cast ballots, violating a central principle of American elections, she said. It seems that no excuse is too small for Ms. Dunmore. Loraine and Cuyahoga Co.’s in Ohio report that they had to do what many counties in many other states have had to do and they “modified the machines, wiring them directly into elections computers to bypass the limited capacity in the machines’ memory cards”. Has anyone heard of ITA testing and federal certification? Arkansas continues to fail all around in their elections administration and with ES&S as their vendor….

    1. this is about the "How the vote got messed up" story link from above, concerning Loraine and Cuyahoga counties in Ohio:

Here’s a quote from the ‘The Plain Dealer’ at http://www.cleveland.com

"One of the key problems involved the memory cards for the machines. They did not have the capacity to hold the 2,000 different ballots to be used in Cuyahoga County for the primary."

Can anyone explain why/how it is that they have 2K different ballots for a primary election?
It seems insane. And the solution–to ‘wire’ (I assume they mean modem connection, or some kind of internet-networking connection)
the voting machines to the ‘election machines’ seems even more insane.

Why would any one machine need to have more than one set of ballots–the right ones?

Can’t the ballots be put up on a secure ftp site, and then downloaded by election workers from each county, according to the ballots that they need, and put onto the machines (after they have been checked–there’s a key point–the election workers from each county should be able to confirm that the ballots are correct and don’t contain any evil trojan horses, etc) When the ballots are put onto each machine, it would seem to be an ideal time to put other things on the machines as well, that should not be there.

The author of the plain dealer article gives her email address. I’ll email her and post her reply back here if she makes one.
