EDITOR’S NOTE: We’ve asked Dan Borchers of Citizens for Principled Conservatism, Brother Watch & Coulter Watch, to cover the “Conservative Political Action Conference” (CPAC) in D.C. this weekend as our Special BRAD BLOG correspondent. We’ve written about Borchers — who was escorted out of CPAC in 2002 for distributing material critical of CPAC darling Ann Coulter and disallowed media credentials in the years following — in several previous articles here, here, both of which include videos he’s compiled showing Coulter to be a detriment to the Conservative Movement. As well, we wrote about Borchers in an article for the February issue of Mother Jones. He previous dispatch from “Bloggers Row” at CPAC on DAY 1 is here.
Anticipation for Ann Coulter’s performance was high. Throughout the afternoon, the emcee repeatedly announced that the first four rows of seats were specifically reserved for gold club members. The panel preceding Coulter’s speech was cut short to prepare for hers. Coulter’s personal bodyguard ensured the stage was secure.
Coulter entered as if she owned that stage.
The audience gave Coulter a standing ovation as she graced the mesmerized crowd with her welcoming smile. The enthralled throng was jubilant. Audience members standing along the walls on the sides and back of the packed auditorium jockeyed for better viewing positions. Cameras flashed. And the audience cheered as she began to speak.
Coulter held the audience in the grip of her words, her voice, her message. A burst of applause and cheers greeted her “Raghead” joke: “I think our motto should be post-9-11, ‘raghead talks tough, raghead faces consequences.'”
But just moments later, a deathly silence filled the room as people grasped the full import of Coulter’s express wish that liberal Supreme Court Justices be targeted for assassination. But Coulter quickly lured back her audience.
During Q&A, one student asked Coulter what her greatest ethical dilemma was. Coulter toyed with the audience as the hushed auditorium awaited her answer to this personal question. Then Coulter replied, “One time I had a shot at Clinton. I thought, ‘Ann, that’s not going to help your career.'”
The audience went wild in appreciation, suggesting hatred of the former president remains high among conservatives.
Another student (a Muslim) suggested Coulter stop denigrating all Muslims for the actions of a few, while a third student criticized her for her racist rhetoric. Coulter’s responses were lackluster and non-responsive. Afterwards, one student noted, “She can dish it out, but she can’t take it.”
Coulter left the stage to another standing ovation and the emcee begged the audience to remain for the next panel. Many left to follow Coulter to a book signing at the Claire Boothe Luce Policy Institute booth. (Complete Audio of Coulter Speech posted previously here.)
But not everyone at CPAC was thrilled about Coulter’s presence. Prior to the speech, I spoke with Mohammed Ali Hasan, a spokesman for “Muslims for Bush” and “Muslims for America” who feels that Coulter is “completely inappropriate” and that she “hurts” the Conservative movement. Hasan unapologetically denounced Coulter as a poor representative for Conservatism. “Ann Coulter spends more time being a racist and bigot, and we don’t welcome her at this conference.”
“Right now,” Hasan went on, “I’d advise the leadership of CPAC to re-think who should be there speaker for next year.” (Listen to my short interview with Hasan [MP3].)
After the speech, I spoke with one student, a Christian, who had deliberately gone down to the exhibit hall to apologize to the Muslim student for Coulter’s objectionable “raghead” comments and others. Many other students were unnerved by portions of Coulter’s speech and her “blatantly beating up on Muslims.” (Listen to my short interview with several of the Students [MP3].)
Perhaps the weirdest recurrence at CPAC is Coulter-mania ? Ann Coulter has spoken at nine consecutive CPAC conferences ? and each year is more manic than the last. The longest lines are always for her book signings. Coulter-abilia is everywhere.
One remarkable aspect of Coulter’s annual CPAC speeches is this startling fact: rarely is the subject known in advance. She is given free rein to speak on whatever she wants.
It is shocking how complacent conservatives have become despite Coulter’s most extreme rhetoric. Indeed, many come to CPAC to see her because of her extreme rhetoric.

I understand and sympathize with those who are very, very troubled by Ann Coulter’s hate speech. However, if you answer her hate with hate, then she wins. Because that’s what she (and all who are truly evil) strive to do: enlist you in their hatred. It doesn’t matter to them who or what you hate, just as long as your primary human emotion at all times is hatred. This is the soul mission of the Devil.
Reject her words, yes, challenge others to reject her words, yes, but don’t answer her hate with hate. Learn to rise above it. People like Ann Coulter always, always, always self-destruct eventually. I think we’re already seeing the beginning of her self-destruction. She definitely appears to be quite anorexic. This is often a symptom of self-hatred. We might be quite surprised, in fact, to disover that the only person in America who "hates" Ann Coulter more than we do is Ann Coulter.
Just take a deep breath. The truth will come out, and good will triumph over evil. It ALWAYS does.

She’s easy to vilify, she’s as venomous as they come, & I’ve been guilty of it, too. But some of the posts here stoop to her level of vitriol.
It’s ugly & I don’t think it helps our cause. In fact, I suspect some of these new posters may be rightwing plants.
Ann Coulter is no different from the KKK members that used to come into the restaurant in Alabama where I worked. After awhile I learned to spot them without even being told who they were – even when they were just having a meal and joking with their friends, a cloud hung around them. You could see something in their eyes, something cold and at the same time pitiful. These people, even those who were loud and seemed confident, desperately needed someone to be inferior to them, because deep down they felt "not good enough" to compete on equal terms. Sometimes they came in suits and ties, sometimes they proclaimed their beliefs loudly on belt buckles and t-shirts and tattoos, but it didn’t take much to see through the fascade – they were frightened little cowards who wrapped their hatred around them like a blanket.
Their ability to feel superior because of their skin color was all they had in their lives to make them feel important – and they were going to hold on to it come hell or high water.
Just like there will always be people willing to follow the Klan, there will always be those sad little souls who identify with Coulter, and who will give her the attention she desperately needs.
Hatred directed outward comes from deep insecurity. Coulter is a stereotypical abuser, she fits the bully personality type to a tee. She knows that if she wasn’t constantly lashing out at people, no one would pay any attention to her – and that would absolutely crush her.
Expect Coulter to get even more bitter and more nasty as she ages, especially since people who have a negative outlook tend to age poorly.
This type of reaction to an Ann Coulter speach is really a hoot. She calls an Arab a "raghead" and all of a sudden she has committed "hate speach" and gets compared to every hate group from the KKK to the NAZI party, yet the same people who condemn this type of act on the part of Coulter seem content to remain silent on the fact that the UN human rights committee is being headed by some of the most murderous butchers on the planet. I guess in the view of Coulters critics, their interpretations of "hate speach" must be condemned but outright murder is OK as long as other nations maintian their killing withint their own borders.

The examples of liberals and Democrats hurling equally detestable epithets at their opponents (Jesus freaks, fundies, nazis, flat-earthers, christers, house niggers, Klansmen, etc.) are too numerous to catalog, and yet Democrats see themselves as the paragons of virtue and tolerance and respect. They surely don’t care if Muslims call Christians "Cross suckers". Where is the mass outrage for that? The din of crickets is louder.

I think it’s great that she said it because I am basically tired of being told by every other race or ethnic group what I can’t say. It’s like, "you’re white, so we get to tell you what you can say to other people and we’ll call you a bigot and racist if you don’t like it." It reminds me of "do as I say, not as I do."

I think she is very arrogant I just saw her on jay leno tonight. but her 15 minutes of fame will end soon, hopefully, if not, then she will get hers on judgement day. But it makes me want to cry when I think of people like her. Especially when she said that gay people are going to hell, if she believes in God then she shouldnt be saying stuff like that because she would know the truth.
