Sometimes this job is too easy. What to read? What to post? Some of these questions answer themselves. For instance, if it’s Friday morning, then it must be time to visit Common Wonders and have a look at Bob Koehler’s newest column. It starts this way:
Nor, I suspect, will “Arlington West,” the makeshift cemetery containing more than 1,800 crosses spread out along the road to the Bush ranch, be part of the slick, insidious hype the Leo Burnett agency is hoping will soften the fearful grip American parents have on their teenagers these days, only one in four of whom wants his or her kid to enlist.
Slick and insidious is right, Bob. Slick like oil on the water. And “insidious” is a perfect word to describe the practice of spending $350 million of our money to lure our kids into a raging man-made disaster. Well, maybe there are some other words. And maybe it’s not even our money. It’s our kids’ money, or our grandkids. Some day the bill for all this insanity is going to come due. And even if the current crop of White House madmen are not around to pay it, somebody is going to have to pay. Guess who? Who always pays? But I digress.
The entire column is worth a read — as always — one passage is worthy of particular attention. Koehler quotes the famous line, “Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori”, as many writers have done in the past. Refreshingly, rather than assuming that all readers know what it means and where it comes from, he provides not only a translation but also a context.
What brilliant (and shameless) manipulation of human psychology — as though the Army’s raison d’etre is the personal growth of young people. Yes, boys have to grow into men, and rites of passage are crucial for this, but the admen and the Army are hawking a cynical lie. Almost 90 years ago, poet Wilfred Owen, who died in World War I, captured the essence of that lie in his extraordinary poem “Dulce et Decorum Est.” (The last line, translated from the Latin, means, “It is sweet and fitting to die for one’s country.”)
“If you could hear,” Owen writes, describing the death of a fellow soldier in a gas attack, “at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues, —
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.”
Thanks again to Bob Koehler, whose care-packages of truth and sanity are always welcome after another week of craziness and vicious lies. Here’s the permanent link to this week’s column: Hiding from Cindy: The world is watching, George — will you look her in the eye?.

What else can we expect from one of the dumbest president in the history of this country. The only thing he was known for doing as Texas governor was executing people and at the rate he was going, he probably took some innocent lives. He used oil money for a huge campaign chest and his daddy’s name to get elected. During the Vietnam War, he smoked pot, snorted cocaine and drank heavy with his frat buddies while poor people went to fight in the war.
And he can still pass himself off as a “patriot” during an election. So he now sends our sons and daughters to their deaths, while all of his family is safe and secure..
ID is for the unintelligent, uninformed and religiously stubborn. No wonder Bush now sucks up to them. We don’t have all the facts on Evolution, but there ARE no other scientific competing schools of thought.
Just for grins, on the way back from school this morning I popped out the CD and turned on the local rock station for a few minutes. "Rick and Bubba" were taking calls from rabid warmongers slamming and sliming Cindy Sheehan. I listened for about two minutes, and turned it off.
What on earth is wrong with these people??
Sometimes I just can not comprehend that kind of hate.
But if you listen to their voices, you can read the tone far better than the words – underneath all of the outrage, they are afraid. They’ve worked for more than two years to prove they were right, and they have failed – every prediction about Iraq made for those who stood against this war from the beginning has come to pass. Every prediction made by those who lied us into this war has failed.
Response is directly proportional to significance – and their response has now turned into screaming lunacy. Even the President who has always cowerd in his comfortable bubble, afraid to face those who don’t agree with him, can no longer ignore us.
Make no mistake, they are losing it. We are the reason.
Thanks Bob Koehler. And most of all, thank you Cindy.
Thanks for this post, WP. Bob Koehler is a gem. He’s still in touch with his soul, a quality sorely lacking in the MSM at this tipping point of human history.
Maybe these folks can help Cindy understand the nobel cause?
"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line."
– President Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998

OT!! Sorry for the off topic, but this might be worth watching, given the "terror drills" scheduled there today:
Explosion in downtown San Francisco
# 4 and 5
Are you telling me, that your president took us to this war, because of the above speeches, instead of CURRENT, FACTUAL and TRUTHFUL intelligence information? He fixed it and he was caught (see DSM)
And why are you , Beth and other trolls from Mr Conyers blog migrating?
I like the Koehler’s "…history digs in and stands watch with Sheehan." It’s happening.
Which ties in with Kestrelbrighteyes #2 great line "Response is directly proportional to significance – and their response has now turned into screaming lunacy."
It had to happen, and it’s fun to watch.
The pro-war guys are getting shriller. Really a good sign.
They love the hat rancher.
Notice in the ad, the kid says he says joining the military will give him money for college. I’ve been saying all along, that Bush has been stingy with college aid (he wanted to cut Pell grants, but he sees the need to give the top 1% rich huge tax cuts!). So, there you have it! This commercial comes full circle, to his whole plan of trying to make college so unaffordable, it makes kids think the only way they can pay for college is to join the military! Too bad, if they get killed in Iraq, they won’t be going anyway!
And it preys upon kids thinking they’ll "become a man" if they join the military, implying that you’re "not a man" if you don’t!
What propoganda BULLSHIT!!!
They aren’t pointing out that Bush ruined the military by putting our soldiers in harms way in a war of lies. Recruiting is down because of Bush. It’s at crisis levels like never before. We are at the breaking point, where if we needed to defend our own borders, we’d be screwed! Bush ruined the military, and put our whole country at risk with the Iraq War!
Send the Bush twins to Iraq, for this "noble cause", as Bush says so elequently. Too bad he can’t tell us why we’re even there. There’s no WMD’s, no ties between Sadaam and Al Qaeda (Osama/9-11 DOES NOT EQUAL Sadaam/Iraq), and they’re basing their constitution on the Koran, so we didn’t bring them a democracy, we created an Islamic State! What will reason #4 be? Sadaam was a bad guy?
These guys got in there stealing elections, and worked quickly to enact the PNAC agenda playbook to a "T". Everything they’re doing, is exactly what the PNAC charter said, which was issued in the late 1990’s. Members of the PNAC are all in Bush’s cabinet now, including John Bolton. Ever wonder why Bush had such a hard-on to get Bolton into his cabinet???
I feel a draft…
If my son or daughter were thinking of joining the military, I would insist they make a visit to the nearest VA hospital and speak with at least 6 wounded and get their opinion first.
Who better could speak to our young, idealists than someone who just got back?
re #13 Good idea, TexasLady
Big Dan:
Judging by the way these Republicans (or are they neoCons ?) cut off money and programs that aid the already poverty-stricken people of our country — I’d say their plan is to create a base of indigent and starving people who have no other option except to join the armed forces for survival and minimum wage pay.
This is no different from the salary offered to indigent and starving middle eastern youth for joining the suicide bomber program — is it?
TexasLady — echo #14!! Good thinking.
