The Declaration of Independence

IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

–Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences
For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:
For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

    I know it’s kinda off topic… but I thought it might be "light-relief" for regulars here to know (those who recognize me as a reg. poster anyway..)

    I became a dad this morning at 1:30am… my point isn’t to brag about my daughters birth… I just wanted to point out the name we’ve chosen… "Nicole"

    It means "Victory for the people".

    It’s my sincerest hope for the future and seemed appropriate considering the day… we will have our victory yet.

    Thanks for posting The Declaration of Independence. It’s eerie, to note the similarity in some of the perceived abuses against our citizens and nation, occurring again.

    More people need to be reminded of it.

    Keep up the good work on the vote scandal, too – we need to ensure that all votes are counted, particularly in the 2006 and 2008 elections. Our vote counts for nothing if we can’t count on our vote being counted.

    Or something like that.

    The flag of the United States of America, according to the US flag code adopted by Congress, “represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing.”

    Just as no political party has a lock on what it means to be a patriotic American, no political party owns the flag of the United States of America. The flag, as a living symbol of the ideals of this country, belongs to each and every one of us. And each and every one of us is responsible for its care.

    That care and responsibility extends well beyond making sure a flag flown at night is illuminated properly or never touches the ground, it extends to accepting responsibility for what is done in our name under the auspices of that flag.

    Going to war, for example.

    As Americans, when our government decides to go to war, in our name, we need to know why we have chosen to destroy the lives of not only our own citizens, but the lives of citizens of other countries.

    We all know, during war, people die. Homes are destroyed, land is poisoned. Generations of families are forever altered.

    So, it is not only our responsibility; it is our right and our duty to ask the question, “Mr. President, why are we going to war?”

    Millions of us around the globe did just that.

    President Bush answered us by saying, in an address to the country on October 16, 2002, “I have not ordered the use of force. I hope the use of force will not become necessary.”

    Over the months leading up to the invasion of Iraq, Mr. Bush uttered other words, not only strongly suggesting that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, but that it was Iraq’s obligation to produce those weapons to avoid an invasion.

    Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, then National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice and Vice President Richard Cheney made their own assertions along those lines. We all remember that, right?

    Problem was, of course, Iraq didn’t have weapons of mass destruction.

    Problem was, of course, Iraq had no connections to al Qaeda.

    Problem was, of course, the inspectors were in Iraq, finding nothing, because there was nothing to find.

    Problem is, of course, Bush sent our young men and women into war anyway.

    The recently released Downing Street Memo, which has received little attention in America’s mostly corporate owned media, contradicts Mr. Bush’s assertions. Whatever anyone’s opinion of President Bush, the Downing Street Memo is something all citizens of this country have a duty to the “living thing” that represents a “living country,” to read.

    Thank you so much for posting the Declaration, and I sincerely hope everyone goes easy on the scroll button…READ IT! Read the Constitution! Look around! 95% (my one-off estimate) of ALL government activities for the past–(?)–well, few decades, anyway, are COMPLETELY UNCONSTITUTIONAL. And here’s the fun part (if you can get some glue on it 😉 )—If I’m not mistaken, Bush, as well as all presidents of the united States, took an oath to uphold the constitution, defend the American people, etc. I don’t care if nothing even comes of Downing Street or Ohio and we never hear about them again beginning now, George W. Bush (along with ANYONE involved in our system of legislation, etc. who took an oath before entering office—better get a mighty big broom!) can right this very minute, with AMPLE evidence, be charged with TREASON, FRAUD, the list goes on…the only problem is, it means completely reconfiguring what the poor, uninformed general public THINKS of as our system of government.
    So to paraphrase (and extrapolate a bit), we can make things right in this country, people. As daunting as it may seem, just look at it this way: we don’t have to lobby, legislate, invent or in any way fabricate positive changes at all (phew!). All we have to do is remind people of what we were given by our forefathers, now completely buried in beaurocracy, partisan pettiness, greed, etc. It will be MUCH easier for us to simply assist the general public in "digging up" their freedom than to fight these overfed aristocrats in their own home field, playing their games by their rules. Just thought I’d add that to all this activity I’ve (fairly newly) discovered here. I very dearly hope that it helps even one person stop, think, and be a true patriot by INFORMING those around them: one of the purest expressions of freedom and love/respect for one’s community (in my opinion).
    My best to everyone, and I look forward to posting here, networking with everyone, and just wreaking general havoc for those that plot and design the defamation and destruction of MY America (ok, ok–you can have some America, too. But you gotta work for it! 😉 )

    Now, some might say that this is just semantics, but I would counter that, in fact the importance of knowing EXACTLY what you stand for/against is immeasurable. This in addition to the fact that so long as we’re celebrating/thanking our forefathers for what they did, maybe we should stop and consider what they actually meant and why. Now, the next sentence may come as a heart-stopper to most of you, so brace yourselves…the founding fathers of the united States of America DETESTED democracy. We are NOT (supposed to be) a democracy. We are (supposed to be) a republic. Democracy seems like a good idea for about a second or two when truthfully considered, until one realizes that it means "mob rules". In a republic, the majority cannot dictate your life to you simply by putting it to a vote. I hear the word "democracy" thrown around so much these days…well, you can have it, cuz I want my nation cooked "republic", thanks. (Oh, and so long as we’re revealing things that upset the way Americans view their world, there’s no Santa Clause. Yeah, I know, I know–I was devastated too…) 🙂

    #32 – I couldn’t agree more if you paid me to. But the point is (oh yes, I ramble alot, but I periodically have a point, too 😉 ) that if we don’t know exactly what we’re standing for and what it’s called, then it is possible, if not downright assured, that we will end up falling into side niches and losing sight of the intended end, or succumbing to peripheral movements with alterior motives. Of course, this is all most applicable on a personal level, which then translates into the movement overall being that much more concrete and viable. If we all, individually KNOW exactly what we stand for, why we do so, what it’s called, then every molecule of every brick in every wall will be sturdy, unwaivering and, to defy this silly analogy I’m using, ADAPTABLE to withstand anything that would try to break, sway, or infiltrate the building they create. Then, if we make a careful study of our enemy, then we know how our own words can be manipulated by others to misinform or confuse. Overall, the clearer the picture we have of ourselves each other and what we stand for, the stronger the movement. Once again, it may seem like semantics, but every aspect of our fight is crucial, from the reasons behind our personal beliefs, to silly little, seemingly meaningless aspects, like the colors we identify with our country and its freedom.
    I’ve been studying semiology for a while now, and I’ve learned that there are MANY levels below the surface of a movement of passion that all play a VITAL role in the structural integrity of the foundation.
    Enough rambling for now… 😉

    Re: #31 – Yes, a republican form of government was what they argued for (and tried to build), and they often used "democracy" as a comparative to show the necessity of a republic.

    Nevertheless, although the founders were largely based intellectually in classical history and philosophy (Greece and Rome) and used "democracy" and "republic" from those traditions, sometimes they themselves slipped and used "democracy" or "representative democracy" meaning the republic they were arguing for.

    Since then, the term democracy has traditionally been used to designate "representative democracy". It has been thrown around a lot lately, but it has been used widely from the beginning of the nation. De Tocqueville’s "Democracy in America" of the 1830’s comes to mind. The many small villages that held town councils and so on were very proud of and spoke often of their democracy (and, by the way, often took Greek names for their settlements) which was often more important to them than their national or state government.

    You can find quotations about "democracy" from a large number of famous Americans throughout our history – always meaning representative democracy or local direct democracy. (Whitman, of course, takes it to a mystical level.)

    My Webster’s dictionary defines democracy as "government in which the people hold the ruling power either directly or through elected representatives".

    Personally, I’ve always appreciated the distinction between direct democracy and representative democracy. "Republic" has a fine history and it is (supposedly) our form of government, but I think the term democracy has a place in our thinking because 1.) there are times and places on the local level where it actually does and should exist – directly and 2.) representative democracy indicates clearly that power still rests with the people, governments "deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed". It might actually be a good thing for citizens to contemplate the distinction between the two.

    I do tend to "wax philosophical", but Jeff brings up an important point as long as we are discussing our core beliefs.

    The foolish empire will crumble under the will of we the people. Today watching the fireworks, most of us were quiet but shouted when they explode. As depressed as many people were regarding the terrible Iraq slaughter and all the lies of us being a truly free country….We sat and stood there with heads held high, awaiting something better.

    A new feeling of rejuvenation came down, and reminded of what the declaration of independence stands for, all of us will march in lockstep and DRIVE the god forsaken bush-cheney regime from our country!!!!!!

    I’ve just seen something absolutely shocking and disturbing. I’m very anxious to provide my analysis to John Conyers, in fact I really wish we had the full senate investigative committee to investigate this as it warrants prompt attention.

    I’ve read recent reports all over about H. W. Bush knowing about the John F. Kennedy assassination and even ordering to having it covered up. I’ve always suspected it was a CIA initiated coverup.

    I’ve just never known about who might have done it, although John Hinckley was a suspect. Apparently Hinckley met with Bush at least several times in Dallas, so to me he seems like a smokescreen guy. I read a report which speculated how Kennedy might have been killed by the limosuine driver. But this next step is just what floors me.

    The following image I captured from a live documentary of the John F. Kennedy shooting following the black sedan down a road in 1963. You can clearly see when you look that it was in fact Secret Service Agent William Greer who aimed a gun directly at Kennedy’s head and shot him!

    Amazingly, if you look at his eyes he is actually looking up towards the camera and his arm is back around the chair. I’ve included two distinct shots which show the crime, but if you blow it up in Adobe Photoshop or Paint you can see it even clearer.

    This has been a coverup since day one, and since Greer is now dead I would think there would be some witnesses who know something big about this case. Come to now think of it, one of the men alive today who knows too much about this case is Senator Arlen Spector. I was floored when I read a report on the Warren Commission that he actually white-washed the Kennedy assassination! Talk about a coverup, what does Arlen know exactly and why doesn’t he want to discuss the driver? I am sure those secrets he has would blow this open.

    Like who in the world ordered Greer to do it, it was supposed to be someone in the free mason society. But with this thing and Hinckley having made an attempt earlier, I smell the elder Bush all over it. Especially given the leaked government document that just recently showed Elder Bush had a telephone conversation in Dallas regarding this.

    And knew it was absolute suicide to let Kennedy go out, yet he did not a thing to stop it. My guess is there is a whole tentacle connected to these guys that we could unlock if there was access to the files. Greer fired the shot though, because the place he points the gun is nowhere near where any assassins would be. It has to absolutely be shooting right at him. I’m astonished the media has never, ever reported it. I think the truth is what the americans deserve. DSM was just the tip of the iceberg wasn’t it.

    Yesterday I opened the Sacramento Bee Editorial page and in the left hand column was a large article of text.

    Without looking at the title my gaze was first directed to an illustration of the flag and then to the following text which began next to it.

    "He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
    He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
    He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death"…

    It wasn’t until I got to "Indian Savages" that I realized I was reading something other than a critique of W’s occupation of Iraq.

    ATTN BRAD AND WINTER PATRIOT –

    A request, and a little background on the reason for it…

    Hey y’all!

    I was in Virginia over the 4th, spending time with family (who, I’m sad to say, are such avid Bush fans STILL that I don’t bring up politics anymore for fear of starting a war over whether or not I’m supporting the troops – not the way to spend a brief visit)

    At any rate…

    The hotel where we stayed had the news on during breakfast every morning (CNN for the most part), and so did several restaurants where we stopped for lunch. I confess I wasn’t listening closely, but even when I was, I didn’t hear ONE DAMNED THING regarding Rove, the Downing Street Memo, the illegal start of the war, election fraud…you name it, it WASN’T news! I suddenly realized that I was getting a glimpse of the world MOST Americans live in, with not much about the war except the latest casualty count, and not much about the country except who’s pissed at Tom Cruise this week..it was surreal!

    THEREFORE, I’d like to make a request….

    Is there ANY WAY to keep a link to the Whispering Campaign somewhere near the top of the main index page? I think it’s our only hope for getting the information out there for real. The "6 or 7" are well aware I’m sure, but the newbies here need to know about it too.

    On the advertising front – t-shirts printed with just the URL – any copyright infringement problems? If not, anyone who wanted to do so could probably get it done locally or online. Maybe bumper stickers would be a good idea too – and don’t forget to add it to your signature on email and "motto" lines in chatrooms and on bulletin boards!

    I truly believe we can make a HUGE impact with this!!

    So what do y’all think?

    T-Shirt? Go for it, Kes! I think some may be coming for the Blogathon, so you won’t have to make ’em. Anything to get the word out, is fine by me.

    Good idea adding the Whisper campaign link somewhere prominently. Hopefully WP will whip me until I remember to find the time get it added!
