  1. “Net zero” means tinkering with the statistics and pretending carbon offsets are meaningful.

    Meanwhile, total energy use in USA went from 100.2 quads (quadrillion BTUs) in 2019 down to 92.9 quads in 2020 due to the pandemic, the sharpest decline since those figures have been kept. As David Holmgren, co originator of permaculture said, recession has been the most effective means to reduce energy use.

    Biden’s pledge might be more believable if they canceled plans for massive highway expansions from coast to coast and there had been reductions of energy use from 2009 to 2017.
