My Thursday interview with Alan Nathan on Battle Line was a hoot. He calls himself a “centrist” because he has some extreme views on both the Right and the Left. Not my idea of a “centrist”. And I assure you, he’s on the hard Right when it comes to the Election Irregularities of 2004, even while he agrees we need paper trails on E-voting machines. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get a recording of the interview, but Nathan has promised he’d get one to me, and I’ll post it when/if I get it.
On Friday, however, I was on Radio Liberty with the charming Dr. Stan Monteith. Wasn’t sure what to expect prior to the interview, but it ended up being one of the most enjoyable I’ve done. Dr. Stan is a REPUBLICAN (a real, live Conservative! Not a fake one!) who gets it in regards to the voting machines and our crumbling democracy in their wake. He’s also a delightful fellow…Really enjoyed this one and was surprised to find him bashing the U.S. Government and the Administration far more than I ever do!
Just under 50 minutes (first minute or two was cut off), and you get to hear “God Bless America” played about 8 times in the bargain! Streaming RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, or MP3 Download.

Good show Brad. Thank you very much.
very worthwhile show with Dr. Stan. evidently, he actually became aware of some new info – because he was willing to make the effort to listen (listening can be hard work sometimes!) and you did not make that effort unnecessarily difficult with rash comments. great job of staying focused on the issues! anxious to hear your session with Mr. Nathan.
It is important that we all replace the terms that denigrate republicans (repugnicans, etc.) with neocon.
There was an interesting article over at Raw Story (link here) where a former UN arms inspector points out that the neocon movement is a parasite on the GOP.
The neocon work is what is responsible for the division, rancor, ad hominem, hubris, and hateful essence slowly corrupting "politics" into criminality.
And slowly moving the policies of the US toward militantcy, isolation from and hostility toward the concerns of the rest of the world, including torture and unrestrained captivity.
And slowly eroding civil rights and constitutional government within the US.
And slowly towards more destruction of the earth and away from corrective measures as a global community.
But the mistake of the left has been to put the neocons in the republican basket, or better said, to put the republicans in the neocon basket forgetting that it was republicans who played a major role in punishing the Nixon administration.
This program Brad participated in, and Brad’s comments, once again puts this in focus and therefore highlites the better practice.
The left needs to focus on the problems as neocon problems rather than republican problems. Because that is more accurate. The head of the DNC, Gov. Dean, is the first one that should get it and get it good and deep.
well said Dredd.
I absolutely agree, Dredd, and I am going to do that starting now. The Republican Party is legitimate and goes a long way back. Deeply woven into the fabric of this country.
The neocons are becoming a big liability to all. A dirty word. I have always expected some sort of united front against them, and I may have been sensing it correctly. Now is the time to use the word NEOCON all the time, with all the negative connotations that it carries.
I must demur.
Every stinking Republican voted against the Conyers Waters ammendment and fair elections, not just the neocons (who are mostly not politicians but behind the scenes operatives who’d never be elected to anything.)
The neocons were the instigators, but all of the Republicans (and most of the Democrats) went along with Bush’s criminal war, not just the neocons.
Nixon was then, this is now. Bush and Co. have done far far more evil than Nixon ever dreamt of, yet no Republican lifts a finger to stop them. You can’t blame that all on the neocons.
Big Oil gave Wolfowitz and the neocons the big boot to prevent them from privatizing Iraq’s oil, weakening OPEC and thereby cutting into Big Oil’s profits. Neither has any morality, but when push comes to shove, it’s Big Business not the neocons (or the politicians for that matter) who call the shots.
Sure, the neocons are ideologically the most egregious, but by pretending it’s only them we’re just kidding ourselves about how serious and pervasive the problems really are.
United States imperialism predates the neocons by a long way, and most of our "leaders" are in on it. John Kerry is as much a loyal servant of the empire as is Bush.
Media consolidation is not a neocon idea, nor is the more general merging of government and corporate power and their dominance over the will of the people.
The insidious workings of the Madison Avenue/Corporate Media propaganda machine mostly couldn’t care less about the neocons – they’re just another client.
The mingling of government and religion is not a neocon idea. (neocons are mostly Jews and would become second class citizens in the phony Christian state many wingnuts long for)
The manipulation of the American psyche through fear is hardly a neocon invention. Bush played 9/11 just like Hitler played the Reichstag fire (though he did so in the service of the neocon agenda!).
It wasn’t only neocons who voted for the cynically named PATRIOT act or the "clear skies" initiative; it’s not the neocons who magically reinterpret environmental law to allow corporations to trash the environment, and all those industry lobbyists given government positions meant to regulate industry are not all neocons, though they are all "corporatists" (fascists).
I wish it were all the neocons’ fault. If only it were so simple.
Mark Lloyd #6…
You are right that the ideas are not new and are not just neocon. But I think that the politicians are more prepared to move away from the neocon MO than they were before, so it is probably wise to draw distinctions at this point. The Republicans are a fact of life in this society, so it would be advisable to deal with them rationally, and try to sort out those who are less destructive.
It is very important to try and elevate the whole political climate in any way possible now… up from this sewer we are presently in. I think we should avoid overemotional name calling and also grouping people and not hearing them out and assessing them individually.
The corporate control of our government is largely our doing since we, the consumers, with our insatiable appetites for cheap goods, have created the demand. A lot has to be done to get out of the corporate stranglehold, and it will have to be the responsibility of everyone.
Of course, unless they are exteme assholes, and you can do nothing but call them names.
