      Hi Desi & Brad,

Spraying tons of insecticide on neighborhoods is not a good idea when there is a genetic modification alternative.

Here’s what I think the genetic modification of male mosquitoes is:
A gene is snipped out that is responsible for the maturation of mosquitoes from larvae to adults. Or a gene is missing for producing viable sperm. Or some other genetic modification is made that causes the genocide of mosquitoes.

      What could go wrong?
If a gene is gone, then it can not be passed on to humans.
Uninfected mosquitoes have been biting humans without a serious problem. There are animals and insects that depend on mosquitoes for their food. They would be hurt. Mosquito larvae eat microorganisms in the water.

Was the genocide of smallpox and polio a problem?
It depends on your point of view. If you’re a human, it is a good thing. If you’re plants and animals, it’s a bad thing…there are too many humans.

Here’s how genetic modified mosquitoes work.
A factory with a lot of workers grows millions, if not billions, of genetically modified mosquitoes each season. The mosquitoes are released uniformly throughout the target area. The higher the density of GM mosquitoes, the lower the viable mosquito population will be in the next generation. If that is done again, the viable population will plummet. Do it again and the viable population will plummet to zero.
So, the more work (that means money) that is expended on the project, the lower the mosquito population. The mosquito population can be wiped out completely, if people are willing to make the effort…just like polio. (Small pox might still be around because governments were not willing to spend sufficiently. An example of austerity. Remember; austerity is a dangerous idea.)

      Robots versus jobs
Eventually, robots will be able to run the genetics factory without human intervention. But humans need money for our economic network. So money without work has to be implemented, as proposed by Thomas Paine in Agrarian Justice 1797.

      Hi Desi & Brad,

The genetic modification process that I wrote about will cause the genocide of the targeted species of mosquito (Aedes aegypti) and leave the other mosquito species alone.

John W. Gofman predicted that nuclear power radionuclides, some of which last forever, will get into the environment and will cause more and more mutations that will lead to the genocide of humans in a similar way that the mosquitoes will be wiped out.
John Gofman discovered that humans are the most sensitive species to radiation. His work at the Lawrence Livermore Radiation Laboratory was hidden from public view, and he was fired.

    3. Harry – thanks for taking the time to comment. In our coverage of the GMO mosquitoes story in FL, we didn’t have time to delve into the specific concerns, but did report that the FDA deemed the project safe to humans, and that pilot projects in other countries were successful.

As you correctly note, pesticides pose a far greater direct safety risk to humans than the indirect, relative safety risk to humans from GMO mosquitoes. And of course any cost-benefit-risk analysis must also include the tragic impact of the Zika virus on babies. Every policy decision is a trade-off, and when it comes to the Zika virus, speed and efficacy are a priority.

But there is also the non-trivial, unknown potential impact on biodiversity. We don’t have a great track record on the unintended and unforeseen consequences of human intervention in adding, subtracting or modifying species in an ecosystem. Programs like this one can be managed well, or managed poorly. We need scientific data and funding to inform policymakers, and minimize negative unintended consequences.
