Well, THAT Oughta Win Over a Few Wingnut Climate Change Deniers!…

Our too-infrequent guest blogger D.R. Tucker is now working the weekend shift at Washington Monthly’s excellent “Political Animal” blog and, as expected, he’s out of the gate like a lion on the climate crisis and the pre-wrangling over the Obama EPA’s proposed landmark guidelines for restrictions on CO2 emissions by dirty coal-fired power plants (ya know, the rules they’re required by law, under the 1970 Clean Air Act, according to the U.S. Supreme Court, to put in place.)

Over just this weekend, D.R. has published a number of sharp articles there on the topic, including “It’s On: You can already hear the denialists screaming. And scheming.”; “The Short-Timers”; “(Dirty) Power Concedes Nothing Without a Demand”; and the ingeniously-named “If You Like Your Planet, You Can Keep Your Planet” (in which he quotes The BRAD BLOG at some length, from this recent piece).

You should read them all if you’d like to be smarter about actual facts in regard to climate change, the GOP denial industry (which will certainly be kicking into the highest of dudgeon once again this week), and the clear and present danger we now face thanks to run-away, human-caused CO2 emissions and the global warming it is causing.

But it was the following exchange in the comments section of the “If You Like Your Planet…” piece — specifically the last line by commenter “Virginia” — which made me smile…

Oh, snap! Now the wingnuts may finally sit up and pay attention! 🙂

Also…later in the same comment section, I happened to notice this very kind thought…

I don’t (think I) know Chris, but his kind words there are greatly appreciated.

  1. Don’t strain yourself with the contortions involved in patting yourself on the back while ‘winning’ a Strawman Argument over unproven allegations ( consensus and peer review are not scientific terms ) over unspecified process in a false analogy ( we are not dealing with black body radiation, a closed system…nor measurable static processes ) which should alarm the herd. Another new collector of debunking the meme has caught my attention.

    Me you should know.

  2. “oldephartte” — that explains the smell.
And, yes, peer-review (as opposed to corporate-paid or government-censored or wingnut self-published-blogspot) is very much part of the scientific method.

  3. opit @1–

Don’t strain your own self pulling your head outta the sand.

Here’s a question for you–what kind of evidence would it take for you to admit there just might be something to this human-induced climate change idea overwhelmingly supported by the world’s scientists for some time now?

  4. “Peer review” is not overtly a scientific word, it doesn’t define a area of science nor a theory, but it is a process that is used to determine the validity of scientific ideas. “Peer review” goes a long way in terms of credibility in all areas of science.

As for your claims about this not being a controlled system…I’m afraid you understand very little about how science works. In science, we create models that are simplified, yes, but which very closely approximate what we see going on in nature. It isn’t perfect, but hey, your cell phone makes phone calls, right? And your microwave manages to heat last night’s TV dinner pretty well. Well, thank the models and approximations.

So we can create simplified models and extrapolate and find out a lot about the world, including that there is something going on with the climate and that hey, maybe you are to blame.

I get the feeling that you don’t understand what you are talking about, and instead have simply memorized a few keywords and phrases that, while they might work at a cocktail party (or a tea party?), they don’t work in the real world, where people who are scientifically literate live. We see through your ignorance and laugh a good laugh.

    Anyway, back to science!

  5. Margot @4–

    Very nicely handled. Thanks.

(It’s one of the things I love about Bradblog. We’re pretty good about not letting nonsense stand unrebutted. Personally, I think it’s very important, sorta vital to the mission. Thanks to everyone.)

  6. Climate Change aka weather
Climate change denier aka someone that lives on the equator, the same weather year round.

Climate Change Deniers politics, someone like you that sucks dicks, is a tool for globalists…look up weather modification treaties and weather patents…open up your eyes and get the nut sack out your mouth…decades of classified and covert weather as a weapon operations…you fuck’n fool, tool.

  7. Wow, “your inner self” @ #6 — what a cogent, persuasive argument. And science-free, to boot!

Do you find many people are persuaded with your “obscene insult” approach?

  8. your inner self @6–

    Was that opinion peer-reviewed?

Where did you learn that science is solely a matter of your personal belief system? Who taught you that? Were you home-schooled by an Exxon-Mobil CEO?

Have you thought of pursuing public relations work?

Do you check the climate science with that mouth?
