{"id":9211,"date":"2012-03-28T00:01:41","date_gmt":"2012-03-28T07:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bradblog.com\/?p=9211"},"modified":"2012-03-28T00:00:30","modified_gmt":"2012-03-28T07:00:30","slug":"10000-computers-attack-online-canadian-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bbnewdb.webbyspice.com\/?p=9211","title":{"rendered":"10,000 Computers Attack Online Canadian Election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/BradBlog.com\/Images\/NDPElection_Canada_iPad_032412_med.jpg\" hspace=\"6\" vspace=\"3\" border=\"0\" align=\"right\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.montrealgazette.com\/technology\/Company+computers+behind+cyber+attack+leadership+vote\/6366836\/story.html\">From <i>The Gazette<\/i> in Montreal<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"media\">OTTAWA \u00e2\u20ac\u201d A large-scale cyber-attack involving more than 10,000 computers was responsible for the online polling problems during Saturday&#8217;s NDP leadership vote, according to Scytl Canada, the company contracted by the party to conduct the vote.<\/p>\n<p>While the attack in no way compromised the sanctity of the vote \u00e2\u20ac\u201d in other words, no ballots cast by bona fide NDP members were added, subtracted or changed \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Scytl indicated in a statement Tuesday that the attack was an attempt to crash or slow down websites by &#8220;saturating servers with bogus external communications requests that deny legitimate users access&#8221; \u00e2\u20ac\u201d otherwise known as a distributed denial of service attack.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And we know the attack by 10,000 computers &#8220;in no way compromised the sanctity of the vote&#8221; how, exactly? Well, because they say so, silly!<\/p>\n<p>We <i>know<\/i> Scytl&#8217;s elections are secure because, as <a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=9067\">we noted in January<\/a> when the Spanish-based company purchased S.O.E., the largest &#8220;election management company&#8221; in the U.S. (they do online results reporting, etc.), they told us so in their own press release announcing the acquisition. And they told us <em>twice<\/em>! They couldn&#8217;t tell us they were secure unless they really were! Am I right, <a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=7998\">Sequoia Voting Systems<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Other than that &#8212; oh, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bradblog.com\/?p=8118\">other than this<\/a> &#8212; voting by Internet is a <i>great<\/i> idea!
