In CPAC Meltdown, Breitbart Forced to ‘Apologize’ for ‘Apparently’ Lying About ACORN ‘Pimp’ Story

Share article:

Just a quick reminder that none of The BRAD BLOG’s recent series of detailed reporting on the MSM’s failure to properly report on the ACORN “pimp” video hoaxes is actually about Andrew Breitbart, in truth. He’d love it to be. But it’s not. He’s just one overly-influential cancer cell in the quickly metastasizing illness over-taking the mainstream media. That illness is best illustrated, of late, by the willingness of the once-credible New York Times (and many others) to treat Andy — as well as his band of GOP propaganda mongers and dirty tricksters — as a respectable source, rather than the confirmed liar, desperate flip-flopper, self-defining hypocrite, and Republican con-man that he is.

But since the “Liberal MSM” are not yet ready to cop to their egregious and repeated errors on that front, and since we’re feeling generous today for some reason, we’ll just take Andy at his tweeted word from last week when he sputtered: “@TheBradBlog U do understand that if I were least bit worried about your line of questioning Id ignore U, right? Do U not get that?”

Yeah, we get that. Which must be why, during his series of insane, paranoid, meltdown rants (see videos below) at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in D.C. all weekend long, where he fingered an imaginary Vast Leftwing Conspiracy at the heart of his epic fail, he forgot to mention The BRAD BLOG for some reason!

It’s as if he were entirely “ignoring” our “line of questioning” for some reason.

That, even as he was forced to admit at the very top of his Saturday morning speech at CPAC — undoubtedly due to having finally been sold out by his own fake “prostitute,” Hannah Giles, the day before — that he did, “apparently,” lie about his phony ACORN “pimp” story…

At the very top of his few short moments at the podium, after being introduced by Giles as “my boss,” Andy said (audio here):

Wow. What a six month’s it’s been! I want to start off with a… I have to apologize to the nation because, uh, the pimp in the pimp and prostitute video apparently wasn’t dressed like a flamboyant pimp. I am so sorry this nation — uh, for — I don’t know what to say. It, apparently it doesn’t matter anymore. Look mainstream media, we are now six months into this ACORN thing and you just lost in New Jersey and Massachusetts and Virginia and we have video cameras on you every where you go, SEIU and ACORN…

Following his admission made to dead silence, he moved very quickly to his imaginary world controlled by “SEIU and ACORN,” as I suspect the CPAC crowd was left scratching their heads at his remarks about the “pimp” not being dressed as a pimp since he has, for six months, being lying to them about that. He even published the lie in his own Washington Timescolumn, when he falsely claimed the highly-doctored, heavily-overdubbed, secretly-taped ACORN hit videos showed his employees James O’Keefe and Giles “going to the Baltimore offices of ACORN … dressed as a pimp and a prostitute and asking for – and getting – help for various illegal activities.”

All of that after Giles ratted poor Andy out, just after he tweet-lied to us earlier last week that he’d “told truth every step of way.” It didn’t stop Andy, the Orly Taitz of the rightwing “journalist” thug and hoaxster junta from finding all new sharks to jump and from blaming his own failures on his “liberal media” conspiracy theories.

Breitbart spent much of his CPAC weekend snarling and performing for the cameras and adoring, unquestioning wingnuts in an embarrassing array of spitting tirades against the world. Yet, in all of them posted so far, he avoided noting that The BRAD BLOG was the one that had originally helped to re-highlight again recently, the fact that his so-called “Liberal MSM” grossly misreported and misrepresented the ACORN “pimp” hoax.

So it was when Andy, after being hoisted on his own fake “prostitute” petard Friday, went on his tear on Saturday, the day after David Weigel of the Washington Independent got the scoop from Giles, who played the “prostitute” in those videos, confirming that both Breitbart and O’Keefe were lying all along about the ACORN “pimp” story in order to sell it.

Weigel then interviewed Breitbart on Saturday at CPAC, capturing the following insane rant:

In a short conversation after his speech — which was taped by a film crew that was hovering around us — Andrew Breitbart chided me for asking Giles about the “no outrageous costumes” attack, saying that it was a “distraction” thrown up by the Center for American Progress and Media Matters and pointing out that when blogger Mike Stark first asked O’Keefe about the costumes, he happily explained that the pimp costume wasn’t worn inside of ACORN’s offices. If George Soros, John Podesta of the Center for American Progress, and Eric Boehlert of Media Matters wanted to watch the unedited tapes, said Breitbart, he was ready. He’d be challenging them to do so for months.

“This is a concerted effort, politics of personal destruction,” said Breitbart. He leaned down toward my notebook as I wrote down quotes. “Fuck you, John Podesta. What’s in your closet, John Podesta? Big Podesta? Big Soros? Do you want us to play these games? Because we’re playing to win.”

While Boehlert, as named above, has done some terrific work on this story, breaking, among other things, Breitbart’s Washington Times column lie, I don’t think that Center for American Progress has covered it at all. At least not since The BRAD BLOG began pointing out the “pimp” hoax recently, following O’Keefe’s federal felony arrest in Louisiana with three others for attempting to manipulate the phone system of a Democratic U.S. Senator, and his preposterous explanation for it.

And wingnut Breitbart’s Soros conspiracy delusions? Whatever. Point here is that Breitbart still refuses to release O’Keefe’s unedited videos on the Internet, despite his willingness to release the phony, doctored-up ones that way. And now, as he was last week with me on the radio, playing a game about George Soros and John Podesta showing up at a Breitbart’s Fantasy Travelling Circus to watch them all publicly.

There is, of course, a reason Breitbart won’t simply release his so-terribly-damning videos in which, even in the doctored versions, there appears to be no evidence of illegalities by the hoaxed ACORN workers according to reports from the Congressional Research Service as well as from former MA Attorney General Scott Harshbarager [PDF].

In truth, O’Keefe, Breitbart’s employee and accused federal felon, never dressed as the outlandish 70’s blaxpoitation pimp as the New York Times and many others have repeatedly misreported. In fact, was conservatively dressed in slacks and button-down shirt, and represented himself to the low-level ACORN workers and volunteers as an aspiring politician still in law school, hoping to help his “girlfriend” Giles by rescuing her from the house of an abusive pimp who was stalking and had tried to kill her.

None of the workers they spoke with who had tried to help them had advised “evading taxes” as the wingnut crew would have you believe, and there was no “ACORN Child Prostitution Ring” as both Breitbart and O’Keefe have happily misrepresented (lied about) time and again.

You’d only know all of that, of course, from reading their released text transcripts, which, unlike the doctored tapes, were not shown on Fox “News,” since the highly-doctored, heavily-overdubbed, secretly-taped videos offered a completely different impression, including the faked TV-friendly notion that O’Keefe was wearing his pimp get-up in those offices, just as Breitbart and O’Keefe had lied about in the media.

Where we now know about those lies, we don’t know about others, since Breitbart and O’Keefe still refuse to release the unedited video tapes for some odd reason.

Incredibly, with all of that, the New York Times still refuses to issue corrections for their stories which helped result in Congressional action, outrageously attempting to withdraw millions (not “billions” as O’Keefe lied many times), from ACORN. (Similarly, outlets that also misreported the story, such as Baltimore Sun, CNN, New York Post, Washington City Paper, Philadelphia Daily News, NPR, and Dallas Morning News have also failed to issue corrections.)

But Andy was melting down all week. In addition to his “Fuck you!” to Podesta, he also described Media Matters’ Senior Fellow Boehlert as “depraved,” adding about him, “What a sickening variant on the human form. His mother must throw up thinking of him.”

He called Salon’s Max Blumenthal “the most despicable life form I’ve ever seen.”

He told Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher to “put your dick back in your drawers.”

And while receiving an award (amusingly enough) “for investigative reporting on ACORN” on Thursday from his fellow delusional rightwing loons at the absurdly named “Accuracy in Media,” Breitbart went off on a bender against New York Times reporter Kate Zernike, calling her “despicable…a despicable human being.”

Nonetheless, incredibly, Zernike’s Times continues to write fawning stories about the pathological liar Breitbart, and refuses to correct their own record where, in story after story, they were utterly scammed by him.

As promised previously, more soon on NYTimes Public Editor Clark Hoyt’s responses to The BRAD BLOG’s call for retractions, apologies, investigations, and explanations for the Times failures, and his extraordinary reasons for still declining to recommend all of the above to the “paper of record.”

* * *

Here are just a few of Breitbart’s embarrassing video-taped confrontations at CPAC. Joan Walsh at Salon has a few more of what she describes as some of the “greatest hits of snarling Breitbart’s Saturday meltdown”…

“Why don’t you care about ACORN? Why do you care about the nuances? Are you insane?”:

“Are you accusing me of being a racist? Will somebody get this guy out of here? You punk!”:

“I have to apologize to the nation because the pimp…wasn’t dressed like a flamboyant pimp”:

And Mediaite has another fun one here…

UPDATE 2/23/10: “Exclusive: NYTimes Public Editor Declines to Recommend Retraction for Multiple Erroneous Reports on False ACORN ‘Pimp’ Story” Full story, Hoyt’s emails…

UPDATE 2/24/10: Hoyt responds to our on his emails and accuses The BRAD BLOG of having a “political agenda” on par with O’Keefe and Breitbart. Also, blogosphere issues blistering response, petition, call for Hoyt to step down. Full details, Hoyt’s email response, right here…

  1. Braddy – I want some of what you’re smoking!

Breitbart was not “forced” to apologize, you ninny. It was a joke. It largely fell flat because the only place the story is getting any traction is at fringe lefty blogs such as yours, Media Matters and Emptywheel’s, plus the conservative ones which are mocking you.

Giles didn’t rat him out either – she told the truth which was obvious to anyone with a set of eyes and a quarter brain, which you obviously lack.

Your transparent, after-the-fact, fabricated, smear job is pure hackery.

Since you claim the publicity for the videos was driven by an obvious lie, when did you and Boehlert first start writing about what was obvious to most everybody else?

  2. Breitbart says: “we have video cameras on you every where you go, SEIU and ACORN…”, but it looks like a LOT of cameras and unspliced video are on HIM! LOL! He better try and figure out who the cameras are really on. The above videos, the cameras are on HIM.

Also, O’Keefe had to get permission from his parole officers to accept his award at CPAC. Great organization! I hope O’Keefe learns soon how to get along with minorities, he’s going to meet a lot of them in prison. Maybe ACORN will try and help him out.

Breitbart looks like he needs high blood pressure medicine. He’s probably got great insurance, though.

  3. Well, I see our resident wing-nut, Daleyrocks, or is that “dumb-as-a-rock,” has again dropped another load, this time with comment #1.

Perhaps you’d like to review my previous responses to you, Daleyrocks, here, here and here.

Be delighted if you could come up with anything even bordering upon an intelligible response.

  4. Lol..

2.Brad Friedman is also butt hurt that Breitbart did not publicly attack his blog at CPAC. Heh!

    Comment by daleyrocks — 2/21/2010 @ 4:56 pm

The only reason Brad’s butt hurts is from slipping in all the bullshit dropped from Breibart and Co.

  5. Bustin’ loose: O’Keefe wrestles with parole officer to make CPAC
By: Nikki Schwab and Tara Palmeri
    Washington Examiner
    02/17/10 8:46 AM EST

Thanks to the courts, he’s stuck in Jersey. But conservative filmmaker James O’Keefe is desperately trying to claw his way to the Conservative Political Action Conference.

O’Keefe told Yeas & Nays he’s in the process of petitioning his parole officer to let him cross state lines to make the big event Thursday where he will be awarded the “XPAC Annual Award for Impact” for cracking ACORN with his pimp suit and, of course, his most recent attempt at high jinks in the office of Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La.

“We’re having this e-mail exchange right now, actually,” O’Keefe said about his correspondence with his parole officer.

O’Keefe isn’t on complete lockdown — he did spend Presidents Day on the ski slopes of New Jersey. But for a trip to the District for CPAC to join his cohort Hannah Giles, he’ll have to beg.

“But hopefully I should be able to make it down to D.C. on Thursday,” he said.

If he can’t make an appearance, he plans to do a prerecorded or satellite interview with Town Hall’s Kevin McCullough that will appear Friday.

But even if he does make an appearance, don’t expect him to be raging at the concerts, comedy shows or bar parties.

“That’s just not my scene,” O’Keefe said.

  6. So is O’Keefe lying to the Washington Examiner, or is the Washington Examiner “making it up”, or what’s going on here? Is it a joke? Like O’Keefe’s videos?

  7. DaleyRocks @ 1 said:

Since you claim the publicity for the videos was driven by an obvious lie, when did you and Boehlert first start writing about what was obvious to most everybody else?

Who was it obvious to? Apparently not even to Breitbart, since he also forwarded the lie in his own WashTimes column.

Oh, and then, (since you haven’t bothered to read my reporting here and just accept Patterico’s discredited and inaccurate “reporting” at face value), these also much be among those who missed the “obvious”:

    Steve Doocy at Fox “News”:

I’m sure you’ve been seeing some of the videos from [Andrew Breitbart’s] BigGovernment.com — and also that we’ve been running here on Fox News — showing these ACORN employees in Baltimore and also in Washington and now in Brooklyn, New York. These videos were put together by filmmaker James O’Keefe, whose joining us on the couch. He’s dressed exactly in the same outfit that he wore in these ACORN offices up and down the Eastern Seaboard.

    Unbylined Baltimore Sun editorial:

The video sounds like a satire: A young man and woman, dressed as caricatures of a pimp and prostitute, walk into the Baltimore office of ACORN…But it’s not satire.

    T.J. Holmes on CNN:

We have got some brand-new developments to tell you about on a story we have been following here on CNN, the conservative activist filmmaker who also poses as a pimp. Why would he do that? Yes, a pimp complete with a fake prostitute. He did this to record two Baltimore ACORN workers allegedly giving advice on how to avoid paying taxes from a prostitution ring involving underage girls.

Scott Shane at New York Times:

They visited Acorn offices in Baltimore, Washington, Brooklyn and San Bernardino, Calif., … Mr. O’Keefe, 25, a filmmaker and conservative activist, was dressed so outlandishly that he might have been playing in a risque high school play.

Jeremy Olshan at New York Post:

O’Keefe and Giles were garishly dressed as a stereotypical pimp and prostitute. O’Keefe was decked out in excessively snazzy flesh-peddler couture…

David Gabacorta at Philadelphia Daily News:

O’Keefe and Giles were dressed as a pimp and prostitute, just as they were during undercover visits to ACORN offices in Baltimore, Washington, Brooklyn and San Bernardino, Calif., over the summer.

Pam Fessler on NPR’s Morning Edition:

In the video that’s been splashed all over cable TV and the Internet, a young man dressed as a pimp and a young woman posing as a prostitute are talking with an employee from the community organization known as ACORN.

Ken Rudin on NPR’s “Political Junkie” blog:

O’Keefe became a national conservative celebrity last year when, dressed as a pimp and accompanied by a young woman dressed as a prostitute, he entered an ACORN office and taped employees…

    Unbylined Dallas Morning News editorial:

James O’Keefe, 25, dressed up as a cartoon version of a pimp. Hannah Giles, 20, barely dressed as a stereotypical hooker … stashed their camera and walked into ACORN offices from coast to coast

Other than them, of course, and the scores of other outlets who repeatedly misreported the O’Keefe/Breitbart lie, yeah, it “was obvious to most everybody else”.

  8. So, the big scandal is that O’Keefe wore the pimp outfit in the introduction for sensationalism? Does that diminish the fact that ACORN employees abetted O’Keefe and Giles in a variety of willfully illegal activities? What am I missing here?

  9. Gismo @ 13 asked:

Does that diminish the fact that ACORN employees abetted O’Keefe and Giles in a variety of willfully illegal activities?

What “illegal activities” did the employees do? I’m unaware of any.

    What am I missing here?

Um, apparently the facts of the story? That the NYTimes and the rest of them fell for a knowing lie by Breitbart and O’Keefe who claim to be saviors against “journalistic malpractice”? That, having lost all credibility, they still refuse to release the unedited video tapes? That they purposely misrepresented just about everything that is shown on those videos?

That propagandists are not “sources”, and the Times should be as ashamed of misreporting this story as they should have been for misreporting the Saddam/WMD story that has cost thousands of lives, and if they are not held accountable, finally, they will keep doing this shame shit over and over and over again?

    Yeah, you’re missing something here.

  10. The story of how this is a fraud is ten times as big as the original “Busting Acorn” story. Where is the media?

    (crickets chirping)

I wonder what you would get if you secretly taped some side chatter at some of the tea parties….

  11. Gismo = R.U. Kidding = DaleyRocks

? Read the previous posts on this before you ask the same dumbshit stupid question yet again, as if that topic wouldn’t have been covered by now.

    That’s what your missing here!

  12. Brad @10 – Of course I’ve been reading your silly posts. Why would I bother commenting if not to point out your lies and distortions.

Please continue to post that short list of media stories which had O’Keefe dressing as a pimp inside of ACORN’s offices and I’ll continue to point out that you’re ignoring the much larger body of stories that got it right. HACK!

  13. Gismo @ 13 asked:

    “…..What am I missing here?”

    A functioning brain.

    Daleyrocks @ 17.

You think everyone sees through the same addled haze you do.
To you the concept of “truth” is anything you agree with and a “lie” is anything you don’t. For you “facts”are just an inconvenience to be ignored if they spoil your argument.
You have never caught Brad in a lie and you never will. He just doesn’t .

  14. I like Brad but this is just soap opera. This is a honey pot created for the bees to buzz around. Like Palin, it works. Meanwhile the illegal occupations and murder continues. 33 civilians killed accidentally today.

Brad, you also missed the 1000+ architects and engineers press conference.

At some point people will ask how you and so many others navigated away from this story of the century.

Is Peter B Collins a conspiracy theorist Brad?

  15. It is quite obvious that the media, basically ALL the mainstream media is knowingly flat out lying about anything concerning ACORN.
ACORN has broken no laws what so ever.

Meanwhile lunatic thugs, fundamentalist nut bags like Blackwater continue to break the law on a daily basis and costing the country 10s of billions while doing it.
Yet where is the media on that?

Totally agree, 9/11 was without any question an inside job and there is mountains of evidence to prove it.
The mainstream media not only ignores it but they actively were/are part of the cover up.

  16. Brad- this is just tremendous reporting. Rich people hate poor people- esp. dark skinned poor people- they’ll take take every crumb- keep up the good work!!!

Also let’s find commonality with the best of the Tea people. End the Fed! STOP interventionist foreign policy. Glenn Beck is a scumbag and phony but AGW is a scameroo. And answer me this- where was the Tea Party when the torture team was in office? Nothing has changed

    PEACE!
    cauldron

  17. If you try and make something “appear” a certain way and it isn’t, and it works, and you get the media to report it, that’s LYING. And you’re not off the hook if you say: “Well, we never exactly SAID anywhere he was dressed like a pimp”.

How about the part you’re NOT saying, I’ll say it FOR you:

“We purposely doctored videos to make it appear O’Keefe was dressed outrageously as a 70’s pimp in the ACORN offices, so it would make ACORN look stupid for not just looking at us and laughing and kicking us out. We then knew the media would run with our deception and report that he was dressed as an outrageous 70’s pimp. And we knew if we got caught, we could truthfully say that we never exactly said that. The plan worked. Except for the part where ACORN was exonerated and Brad Blog picked up on the fact that we purposely mislead the media into thinking O’Keefe was dressed like that in ACORN offices. Subsequently, O’Keefe tried another ‘sting’ and got arrested. The bottom line is O’Keefe got arrested and no one at ACORN did. We don’t want people to realize this. We are now in interference and distraction mode, shilling on websites comments to put out the fire.”

  18. …continued…

Additionally, when we get caught with our pants down, another tactic we love to use is to say this story isn’t important and there are other more important things going on and ask why Brad isn’t reporting on really important stories.”

  19. Here’s the real story: This pathetic, fatuous pig attention whore Breitbart, is taking advantage of a few retarded people (who happened to work at an Acorn office) who apparently were gullible enough to go along with a fraud. There were other Acorn employees who kicked the fraudsters out and wouldn’t have anything to do with their shenanigans.

Using Breitbart’s logic – since a Republican politician gets caught taking a bribe in a sting the ENTIRE Republican Party must be dismantled. (Not a bad idea, actually).

That said, Andrew Breitbart must be taken seriously. He, like others of his ilk, are true dangers to America.

  20. Dear Edward Rynearson @ 19–

I think the story you’re passionate about that’s not being covered–what’s the truth of 9/11–and the story Brad’s covering here are heads of the same hydra.

It’s my feeling that we all have to push in whatever way we can about whatever moves us. Just feeling a little protective of Brad here as I believe he is not unsympathetic to your cause but his focus has been primarily elsewhere.

So please continue to pursue the 9/11 truth. If I may be so presumptuous to speak for others here, I think we’re all with you. I think we’re all fighting the same fight, pursuing the same truths. Going at the beast on multiple fronts makes sense to me.

  21. As a lurker on here for many years I know the visitation of trolls is a relatively recent phenomenom. We all know what that means. Keep turning up the flame brother.

Pimposter-gate is about played out though, I agree Nunya and Eddie that BF’s incredible talents may be getting soaked up inordinately on one topic. NYT aint gonna say uncle…deal w/it and move on. If we must disect any O’keefe related craziness we should focus on the NOLA bugging. 4 people are charged. With actual crimes. Howard Baker is involved in their defense. Howard motherfuckin’ Baker and some uber RNC lawyer named Madigan. Why?

Please, less ACORN, more NOLA. Sure 9/11 is huge, the motherlode etc. I agree it is THE key to ultimately saving our planet….but thre are sites out there devoted to that.

Brad is Da Man on all things electoral. We should all do what we do best. I like asking people do they know the results of the exit polls in the Mass. race. Fun little trick question, but a great conversation starter.

To all you trolls, welcome, but you really are wasting your time here. Maybe try HuffPo, DKos, DU or some similarly sold out sites. They have millions that still buy into your silly divide and conquer idiocy.

  22. ok, so i finally broke down and watched some video of that reptile not too brightbart. Wow. Nice clinical definition of batshit crazy. So much raw hatred and anger. Should be very easy to send over the edge. He wants to be nudged over.

As a non-violent pacifistic fountain of brotherly love who captures spiders and other bugs in his house to let outside…..Buddha forgive me but I get the urge, watching this freak, to kick his ass 9 ways from sunday.

Peace, have a great day, gonna go ring my mindful bell a few times and bask in it’s glorious tone.

  23. Why haven’t the Acorn employees in the edited videos sued Breitbart and The New York Times for libel? It seems like an open and shut case against the Times, given that they have failed to issue a correction despite all the notice they’ve received. The impact on these people’s lives has been tremendous, and for no acceptable reason.

All ANY corporation understands these days is money. Just because The New York Times was once the nation’s “paper of record” doesn’t mean its executive’s instincts today are any different than those of the executives at Exxon.

  24. camusrebel @ 26

    What you said…
The sellout sites are fun to read on occasion, but if I read one more reference to the strategical/master chess playing Obama, coupled with news of Tiger’s penis and the nude, starving model photos at Huffpo…Jesus.

Great work as per usual Brad. We lurk and learn.

  25. With all due respect, Edward Rynearson #19, you “truthers” are really becoming quite boorish.

The world did not start and end on 9/11.

It is possible to cover a topic that is of importance which is not linked directly to 9/11.

Many of the problems we face today relate to decisions that were made either prior to or subsequent to 9/11 that is not directly related to 9/11.

If I, for example, cover the topic of how the Right has engaged in a 40 year project to pack our courts with judges linked to the billionaire funded Federalist Society, which was founded in 1982 by Robert Bork; if I show that these “radicals in robes” have launched a project designed to erode and destroy the very foundations of constitutional democracy in favor of a dictatorial, privatized corporate security state which, in the end, will wreak far more havoc at a far deeper level than 9/11 and Pearl Harbor combined, does that make me some type of sell-out because I don’t also choose to include an analysis of what happened on 9/11?

Time to wake up and get a good whiff of the crap you’ve been shoveling, my myopic friend.

  26. Truth in Journalism is what we demand, and should expect from anyone that call themselves a journalist.
Andy has again and again shown to be less then truthful.

  27. Dear Lady Liberty @ 11

Thanks for the link. The episode with the black guy is by far the best of the videos I’ve seen so far. Cuz that guy knows his shit and is completely unintimidated. In my opinion those are the ingredients needed and most effective for revealing Black Bart. When he’s actually confronted by evidence and sanity, his lies, distortions, and overall wackoness become much more evident with the contrast provided by a little reality.

  28. A big element that seems completely missing from the ongoing Acorn/O’Keefe discussion is that the whole clumsy Giles/O’Keefe scheme was based on entrapment. When did entrapment become some sort of accepted norm and model of appropriate and decent behavior. Did I miss another memo?

Those few Acorn Housing employees who did behave inappropriately weren’t bothering anyone before O’Keefe and Giles came in and started lying to them by creating an image of two nice kids in desperate straits looking for a little help.

When did lying to people, playing on their sympathies in order to make them look terrible with the intent of getting them into a shitload of trouble become a commendable act of civic loyalty?

  29. David Lasagna @ 33 said:

Thanks for bringing up the point here, David. It’s a bit deeper down into the weeds than I had hoped to have to go in this series (though I may to), since it’s meant to be about the media failure, as opposed to the Breitbart/O’Keefe/Giles con job and the years-long disingenuous attack on ACORN simply because they have the temerity to register millions of low- and middle-income voters who tend to vote Democratic, instead of Republican.

But as long as you broach the subject, this comment from, Tommy Christopher from Mediaite, who confronted Breitbart at CPAC (video at the link), speaks to exactly that point.

In the video, Christopher presses Breitbart on his response to critics who might argue that O’Keefe’s use of a stereotypical black 70’s pimp to sell the hoax ACORN tapes, has racist undertones. It’s a fair question, and one that Breitbart has some trouble with, as seen on tape.

Christopher then writes about that moment this way:

First of all, I did not accuse anyone of racism, no matter how much Breitbart wishes I did. I simply asked a question. Breitbart and his crew might want to paint this as an indictment itself, like “when did you stop beating your wife,” but this is just not the case. There’s ample reason to ask it, and it’s a gift-wrapped opportunity for them to put this issue to rest.

In fact, this points up a neat contrast between O’Keefe and myself. I had a reason to ask the question. It’s an issue that’s been raised elsewhere, based on O’Keefe’s own behavior. In fact, after my interview with Breitbart, several CPAC attendees thanked me for “calling it out.”

O’Keefe, on the other hand, decided to set up a sting operation to see if ACORN would give tax help to a pimp and a prostitute. Why? Did O’Keefe have any reason to believe that this was an issue for ACORN? He’s never said so. So what is it about ACORN that made him want to engage in the pimp attack? Where was the probable cause?

If only James or Breitbart would answer that. For it appears that Breitbart’s influence over O’Keefe extends to only let him talk to friendly journalists, but, as our encounter shows, his influence isn’t large enough to include taking responsibility for O’Keefe’s actual product. Apparently, O’Keefe has no editor. This is a great deal for Breitbart, as he gets to exploit O’Keefe’s work, but assumes less responsibility in protecting him.

Yup, having the cake, eating it to, and entrapping along the way.

  30. For Edward Rynearson @ 19 (and the others who echoed) who wrote:

I like Brad but this is just soap opera. This is a honey pot created for the bees to buzz around. Like Palin, it works. Meanwhile the illegal occupations and murder continues. 33 civilians killed accidentally today.

Brad, you also missed the 1000+ architects and engineers press conference [in re: 9/11].

At some point people will ask how you and so many others navigated away from this story of the century.

Apparently you are having some trouble seeing the forest for the trees, Edward. I’ll take the blame for that, since I can’t make the point each and every time in each and every article.

But the point is, the reason the corporate media (and therefore, the bulk of the blogosphere) haven’t reported satisfactorily on 9/11 issues, and the issues of the “illegal occupation and murder” you reference, is underscored by this entire series of reports.

The media is not being held properly accountable, and they are simply and uncritically passing on bullshit from GOP agents like Breitbart/O’Keefe (“ACORN is bad”), from Bush/Cheney (“Saddam has WMD”), and yes, even from the 9/11 Commission (“Al Qaeda plot, we knew nothing about it, could do nothing to stop it, nobody should be held accountable).

I’m sorry that you don’t yet seem to appreciate that you can have all the “truth” in the world, but if the corporate media does not bother to report it — or worse, misreports it — then it doesn’t exist.

That’s the paradigm that must chance. That’s what these series of ACORN/O’Keefe/Breitbart/NYTimes reports are about, and that’s where the battle must be won, or else all the “truth” in the world will never actually matter.

Hope that makes sense. If not, I’m not sure what more I can do to help you (and other folks who share the same concerns) to understand.

  31. Brad, #36
Makes perfect sense, as all this propaganda from the Reich wing is all part & parcel, all connected.

Basically the worst villain of all is “The Media” because without their help none of this would be possible.
Stop the bald faced lies of the media and that’s 90% of the battle.

  32. Oh and I think Mr. Canning might be due for a vacation to chill.
I might suggest a cruise they are very relaxing.

  33. It is said that politics makes strange bedfellows, and that there is no honor among thieves ,or liars.

A perfect illustration of this is the alliance of Breitbart and Kenneth Blackwell.

Kenneth Blackwell ,who was Ohio Secretary of State was also was cochair of the Committee to reelect GW Bush ,has a dubious record in relation to the disputed Ohio election results in 2004.As an example,he went so far as to reject voter registration forms that were not on 80 pound paper stock.

(This is the same election that Mike Connell was supoenaed to testify about before his plane crashed.)

Presently, Blackwell is affiliated with Tony Perkins’ Family Research Council AND is a commentator for Brietbart. In fact, Blackwell gave a speech at the CPAC conference, just prior to Black Bart’s appearance.

It is the height of irony that ACORN who was at the forefront of legally registering voters, has been defunded by the Census Bureau,in great part due to devious machinations of some, including those who have such a questionable cloud of their own role regarding voting irregularities.

  34. Keep after them, Brad.

You are now the only trusted (and “liberal!”) media covering this flake.

I can’t watch MSM coverage anymore. Too unreal and pointless in the midst of this financial catastrophe.

And who keeps paying these guys? Are their coffers still flush from the “little guys?”

    It would surprise me.

Thanks again for all you to do keep us informed and sane.

    Suzan

Incredibly, with all of that, the New York Times still refuses to issue corrections for their stories which helped result in Congressional action, outrageously attempting to withdraw millions (not “billions” as O’Keefe lied many times), from ACORN. (Similarly, outlets that also misreported the story, such as Baltimore Sun, CNN, New York Post, Washington City Paper, Philadelphia Daily News, NPR, and Dallas Morning News have also failed to issue corrections.)

    Jun 15,2007
Kenneth Blackwell’s 2004 presidential election shenanigans in Ohio
    by Bill Berkowitz

Landslide Republican gubernatorial loser moves on to Washington to work with Tony Perkins’ Family Research Council

In mid-March, the Family Research Council (FRC) announced that Blackwell had been hired on as a Senior Fellow for Family Empowerment at Washington’s premiere right wing religious lobbying outfit.

In one of his first public appearances as an FRCer, Blackwell spoke out AGAINST congressional efforts to reinstate the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) lapsed Fairness Doctrine, at a forum sponsored by Paul Weyrich’s Free Congress Foundation (FCF). . In addition to being a contributing editor for Townhall.com Blackwell…(One of Breitbart’s enterprises.)

Blackwell became the Katherine Harris of the 2004 election cycle when he was both the Chief Elections official of Ohio and the honorary co-chair of the “Committee to re-elect George W. Bush.”

According to Wikipedia, “Allegations of conflict of interest and voter disenfranchisement led to the filing of at least sixteen related lawsuits naming Blackwell.

Two years later, “Blackwell was also named in a 2006 lawsuit related to his office’s public disclosure of the Social Security numbers of Ohio residents.”

Blackwell was invited to join the Arlington Group in the summer of 2004 “a powerhouse, by-invitation-only organization whose roughly 60 members have direct access to the White House.”
A recent story described the Arlington Group as “a forum [headed by Focus on the Family founder James Dobson] where the leaders of more than seventy ‘pro-family’ organizations meet to discuss strategies.”
His run for governor was also strongly supported by two very controversial right wing pastors, the Rev. Rod Parsley, head of the World Harvest Church, and the Rev. Russell Johnson, the senior pastor of the evangelical Fairfield Christian Church — key organizers of the state’s so-called “Patriot Pastors” and the “Ohio Restoration Project.”—-

  37. Those still-frame close ups of Breitbart are giving me giggle-seizures. He looks exactly like the unhinged John Lithgow character in TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE.

  38. 9-11-01 is what the neo-con agenda hangs its hat on. Yes it gets old, but it is essential to bring down the rest of the “patriot act” type thinking, by exposing.

The science (nano-thermite paper…peer-reviewed, of course, for one), and massive evidence of the government’s cover-up. Heck, I tire of myself even, stating it over and over, encountering angry resistance, as i am dropping links of 9-11-01, all around the internet,

but I won’t stop. Friday was a press conference announcing that there are over 1000 (1048 now and growing) architects and engineers, mostly engineers, calling fiction on the government version. We all need to push this awareness. Our democracy is dependent on it. I won’t apologize for it either.

Thank you Brad for bringing this Breitbart story. These stories are part of the public’s need to wake up, letting it be known the degree of criminality we are dealing with, where a conscience is non-existent in the effort to gain total control, by these GOPigs.

Hats off to all truthers also! Maybe our being as unrelenting will make clear how important what we are saying is. Insufficient words to emphasize that.

  39. sounds like Breitbart has a severe case of anger misdirection. he’s furious at O’Keefe for blowing the stunt but can’t admit it to himself let alone to the public.

  40. Thanks for the video link Blubonnet, I was hoping there was something for me to watch. I am a truther, but I try not to be boorish about it. Sometimes it’s relevant, sometimes not. It doesn’t need to be discussed on every thread.

  41. Either BradBlog is trying to bring down the New York Times, or the New York Times is trying to bring down the BradBlog.

BradBlog is naming its adversary and the New York Times is passing.

    Who’s lying?

  42. Soul Rebel, yes agreed. Most here are enlightened. We don’t need to offer much to those on BB in information on that subject. I am respectful of all those regulars like yourself here. We can be very appreciative of the work by our host, and his guests, and hats off to Ernest Canning as well for all the fine work he has done.

  43. OMG…this could in a round-a-bout way, relate to the story too, NYT interwoven, in this long court case, involving a whistle-blower,….in an indirect way, interdependent entities and shenanigans, intriguing…

  44. There’s so many sins here, but among them is the fact that not only did the NYTimes (and other “liberal” lol media) pass on the lies and deceptions of O’Keefe/Breitbart, but they should be doing the opposite. Doing what Brad’s doing.

That is one of the biggest sins here: the NYTimes is SUPPOSED to be doing what Brad’s doing!

IE: if Brad wasn’t doing it, no one would be! And the NYTimes would be just happy as a pig in Judith Miller’s shit if that was the case.

But too bad NYTimes, we’re no longer swallowing your bullshit and the big lie that you’re “liberal”.

  45. I’m still waiting for Gismo to enlighten us as to the “illegal activities” that ACORN supposedly abetted? Typical wingnut – make the accusation but run and hide when asked to back it up…

  46. The Harshbarger report did not say the videos were doctored to make ACORN look bad, as Friedman likes to suggest. It said there were edits and narrative voiceovers — just like in any documentary. It did not say those edits and narrative voiceovers were misleading.

The full unedited audio is available at biggovernment.com/acorn.

What’s more, Harshbarger was hardly conducting an independent investigation. He was a consultant paid by ACORN — as independent as a researcher paid by a tobacco company who finds no link between cigarettes and lung cancer.

And he didn’t interview any of the ACORN employees that appeared in the tapes.

“We did not interview the employees captured on video, since we were satisfied there was no question that the visits occurred and the comments were made. . . . Hence, all our knowledge about the videos is largely circumstantial and secondhand.”

Just some of the facts Friedman is not telling people.

  47. “Why do you care about the nuances?!”

I love this quote, since Mr Breitbart prefers the broadest of brushes for his tar.

It’s as if he were saying, We crafted this story to pulling your string, so why aren’t you dancing?!
