    1. As a user of solar electricity since 1990, I am extremely skeptical of Mr. Musk’s claim for an electric truck. The batteries would be a substantial portion of the weight of the vehicle, not including their lowered performance in winter.

Relocalizing food production makes more sense than this alleged techno-fix, but that would require us all to live differently. Oil rationing after peak fracking will probably force this faster than concerns about climate chaos.

Given the laws of physics, can the Tesla Semi really go 500 miles, and what will the price be?

    2. Mark –

Your EnergySkeptic friend reads a bit more like EnergyCYNIC. 🙂 While, of course, I can’t tell you if Musk is exaggerating what the Tesla Semi will really be able to do, she seems to rely a bit more on the Koch Brother’s scientist (Richard Muller) for her world/oil views and seems to have quite a bit staked on the idea that trucks simply cannot be replaced by electricity, must run on diesel.

I don’t know if she’s right or not, but with pronouncements like hers, you’d think she’d know that Tesla vehicles don’t use a lithium battery, they use hundreds of them, rather than just one large one (as most other e-vehicles makers currently do.)

It’s another reason I remain skeptical of the EnergeySkeptic. 🙂

    3. Rick H. @ 3:

You are likely correct, of course. My reference to him concerned the woman who writes the blog that Mark Robinowitz cited. She explains in her life story that she was influenced by Muller. Presumably she is citing his work before his eventual “ah ha” moment.

In any event, however, it was just one of the reasons mentioned for being skeptical of her various forms of (a bit too recognizable) cynicism from folks who seem to want to find reasons to throw up their hands and say “We can’t do anything about the problem, so might as well just continue letting the fossil fuel folks have their way.”

I find that assessment dangerous, cynical and counter-factual.
